Well, my broody hatched out 3 out of 3 eggs

She is being an awesome mom. Of course the chicks are mutts (not even sure what they are. The black one came from a white egg and the 2 yellow ones came from green eggs.

Got a few more done

Side note: Im possibly looking to sell my bantam cochin roo. He is the best roo and Im having a really hard time with this, so if someone is truly interested in him just PM me. He turned a year in March. And he is wonderful with the hens and people. Not a mean bone in his body.

Sounds like a busy chicken day in AZ.

I worked steady from 8AM to 6PM. Got home did chores, picked beans and squash and made some beans, squash and bacon. Yum.. the 13 year old liked it.

Called my son for his B-day. He is 22 today. I am getting old.

Talked to some folks about buying some of my laying flock as I make room for the new ones. They were expecting year old hens for $10 or less.

it is hard to tell from the pictures, can you take a picture of the two barred rocks together where you can see them both...

PMS class went great tonight and I can't wait to go tomorrow. I never thought I would be so excited about exercise

Last weeks total I walked 5 miles, so far this week I have done 3 miles plus cardio and weights.

Just a side note to those watching their food intake: Do not let anyone tell you that Nutella is a good substitute for peanut butter! That stuff tastes so good and I don't think it is really that great for you. If you don't know what it is think about the center of a ferrerra rocher (sp?) candy....now think about an entire jar of it!

Mahonri ~ I so do wish I had the funds at the moment. I would be at your place in a second to buy your birds. I really need to replace some of my old hens but alas I will probably get replacements from what I have here.

Because a local feed store near me got overwhelmed and the chickens needed more room. In exchange for raising the birds for the next few months the owner agreed to provide all the feed, bedding and whatever the birds need free of charge and wipe out my bill with them as well as let me keep whatever few birds that I might fall in love with but so far I just don't think I want any of them. That could change. So if you see me refer to refugee birds that is what I am talking about. They will be returned to said feed store and put up for sale in a few months. Right now there are 60 of them but I am supposedly taking in 30 some odd more in a day or two. Please don't ask the name of the feed store because I don't feel comfortable just coming out and saying. Some here have figured it out and that is fine too but I won't confirm or deny either way

They birds are roughly 3 months old.

Edit: They are all separate from my own birds and everything is completely separate from my buff orpington pullets that I have for sale. It's alot of work but the birds deserve it.

I figured they came from either someone or a store. Thanks for the quick explanation despite my obvious laziness. Even if you didn't say it, I would assume they were away from your current stock. You don't seem the type to take the risk. Can you tell if their ill or other? I think i see a frizzle in there. Haha.

No worries about the stores name. I have six rabbits in my house from the rabbit gentleman I mentioned a few pages ago. I'm holding onto them until he figures out a routine and places for all of his stock. He admitted he was in way over his head, I don't see reason to hurt him anymore by blabbing his name.

Good luck ok? :O Let us know if something goes wrong or you just plain could use a break!

RRR ~ They all seem healthy but some were weak and I think it was just because of being so confined. That one you see is not a frizzle. She was taking a dust bath. LOL There are cuckoo marans, black langshans, spitzhaubens, delawares, barnvelders, and silver phoenix. Maybe something else I keep forgetting to write down all the different breeds.

Need some advice folks: I am getting discouraged. I feel like I am paying more attention to my birds than I do my own health, but it is getting me nowhere.

-As you know, when I came back from Chicago the birds had a respiratory thing. Treated for 7 days, then halved the dosage per insturctions and am currently treating for an additional 7 days.
-Then I had the red mites. Will retreat on Friday to catch any hatched egg sacks.
-Then I treated the 2 hens for bumblefoot (GCKid-we have those 3-pronged devil thorns in the yard too)
-All chickens are getting yogurt or eggs daily.
-The coop has been thoroughly scraped & cleaned 3 weeks running.

1) I came home yesterday to find Slayer (buff brahma) dead in the coop. Stiff & already discolored. I was unable to tell what killed her. She had been one of my broodies who never "perked up" after the broodiness. She seemed blah over the weekend, but had no outright symptoms.
2) I soaked both bumblefoot hens in the tub , re-drained, and re-bandaged. Both hens were caged with soft bedding.
3) Runt (the house favorite) had minor bumblefoot. It looks better already, but she feels light & seems lethargic. Her nasal passages are crusty.

The question(s):
-Obviously something is going on here. Why all the sudden illnesses/issues?
-Do I keep treating with antibiotics? The resp. symptoms have mostly disapeared--except boogery chickens and some lethargy.
-Or should I just let natural selection take its course? (Technically I believe in this, but they are also our pets)
-Won't the antibiotics continue to be "hard" on the chicken's systems? Some hens need to put on some weight. Roos seem unaffected, but they aren't pumping out eggs.
-I have cleaned and recleaned the coop, bleached, and rebleached. Short of getting out the flamethrower & burning the "dust" in the dirt, I don't think I can get it cleaner. Ideas?
-Should I get out the flamethrower? Yes, I know grain/corn dust can be explosive. I would scrape the coop clean first and have several hoses at the ready

Thoughts? If nothing else, I could just use a hug.
