Arizona Chickens

My first attempt at hatching was a complete failure.  The eggs I got from Aloha didn't hatch at all.  Only three made it do a late stage of development, but they are three days late and there's no sign of success.  I'm not sure what happened, but I'll have to try again.  She did warn me that the eggs were a bit older and may not have a high hatch rate, but I expected at least a few...  My humidity and temperature did not stay as stable as I expected, though, either.  It's all a learning experience, but I'm sure glad I didn't make the attempt on expensive, specialty breed eggs!

So what do you all do with the eggs that don't hatch?  They've been sitting in a high-humidity, high temperature incubator for nearly a month.  Are they still ok to cook up for the flock or do they just need to go to the compost?

If they are clears I scramble for the birds, if partly developed I put them in the worm bin or compost pile.

Like many (not all) Arizona Statutes, it is simple and straight forward.

ARIZONA STATE SENATE
Fifty-First Legislature, Second Regular Session

FACT SHEET FOR S.B. 1151

fowl regulation; prohibition

Purpose

Prohibits municipalities from adopting zoning ordinances that forbid residents in single-family detached homes from keeping fowl in their backyards.

Background

Statute lists the buildings and structures that municipal governments have the authority to regulate and lists other areas that a municipal legislative body may choose to exercise authority, including the establishment of a variety of districts (A.R.S. § 9-462.01). Currently statute does not specify any regulation regarding fowl owed within municipal boundaries.

Fowl is defined as a bird that is raised for the purpose of consumption.

There is no anticipated fiscal impact on the state General Fund associated with this legislation.

Provisions

1. Prohibits municipalities from adopting zoning ordinances that prohibit single family detached residences from keeping fowl in the property’s backyard.

2. Allows a municipality to restrict the number of fowl and the ownership of male fowl, unless the male fowl is incapable of making noise.

3. Includes language that specifies that this act preempts all local laws, ordinances, and charter provisions to the contrary of the added language.

4. Becomes effective on the general effective date.

What I find interesting in a rather tongue-in-check way is that ducks are obviously included, but it isn't the male ducks that are noisy!
Every time I would try to go on the tab for the info it would not work, after about 7x of hitting the tab it opend.. Thank you for posting

The red flag for me is #2. If municipalities can restrict the number of fowl, they can severely limit the number kept, maybe even to 0 or 1.
Maybe 1, but 0 would be a direct conflict with #1. I would guess the thought is that if it comes down to being required to allow fowl, that most will be reasonable about the number. Of course, what is reasonable?

I cut two foot lengths of rolled fencing. The fencing is 4 ft wide and I wired the sections together. The fence forms a "C" at the bottom of the run facing outward. It looks a lot like razor wire LOL. I sit concrete blocks on the fence sections. It keeps our determined beagle from digging in. I leave the cut "spikes" outward.  I'll try to post a picture for you. It was easy and cheap.

Yes love to see the photos.. Glad you goined in..AND

Do you let your chickens out? This seems like a great deterrent to predators (or beagles!), but knowing my chickens they would get too close to that razor wire while free ranging and take out an eye or something.

We live in Chino Valley but it gets hot up here sometimes. Our coop is in the shade under a tree but we put out a couple of cat litter boxes with 2-3 inches of water in them and they go wading in that especially in the afternoon. Some times I've seen them just standing in the water. I also put a fan to the small door to circulate the air and, of course, plenty of water with ice in it.

Oh yes, I found a new chicken farm that is raising all kinds of chicken breeds. It's called From Fluff to Feathers and they are in Paulden, AZ. They said they had the larger BO's I'm looking for along with many other breeds and, no shipping charges. If anyone is interested you can go to http://www.facebook.com/fromflufftofeathers or call 928-848-7170. The only problem is that they don't have anyone who knows anything about sexing a chicken so you have to take your chances on straight runs. They will be supplying chicks to one of our local feed stores this spring. They are raising hatchery and show quality birds.
