Arizona Chickens

I gave my Clare a bath to day, she looks terrible, she blow out her feathers and has a crop of new ones coming in. I thought that a bath might help the itchy sets of all those feathers. My hair dryer didn't turn on, so there I am with Clare rapped in a towel. I quickly rushed to the store and grabbed a hair dryer. I announced that I was in a hurry, my hair dryer is broken and I have a wet chicken at home I need to dry. I got a strange look from the cashier, Chicken? as I picked up my change I told her I have a few chickens as pets, one was dirty. Oh, ya, of course still not convinced I was all there. I think I gave her something to think about.

Clare had not moved when I got home. She really seemed to enjoy the hair dryer. When I lifted her wing to get under them I could feel her relax her wing and open slightly. The hole time she talked to me in that quite little sounds. Closing her eyes and seemingly sleeping for a few minutes at times.

My first attempt at hatching was a complete failure. The eggs I got from Aloha didn't hatch at all. Only three made it do a late stage of development, but they are three days late and there's no sign of success. I'm not sure what happened, but I'll have to try again. She did warn me that the eggs were a bit older and may not have a high hatch rate, but I expected at least a few... My humidity and temperature did not stay as stable as I expected, though, either. It's all a learning experience, but I'm sure glad I didn't make the attempt on expensive, specialty breed eggs!

So what do you all do with the eggs that don't hatch? They've been sitting in a high-humidity, high temperature incubator for nearly a month. Are they still ok to cook up for the flock or do they just need to go to the compost?

I scramble and cook all eggs that don't hatch and feed them to the chickens unless they are bad/smelly. I have been doing that for 2 years and have never made a bird sick. I rarely get a spoiled egg since I candle weekly and pull any eggs that aren't fertile or aren't developing.

who is doing your hip. My mother had 2 knees, 2 hips, 1 elbow and 1 shoulder, I had 1 knee all with Core. They seem to have great doctors. A while back we saw a doctor with them we were not sure of, the next appointment we had was with his replacement. He was with them only a short time. Must not have been to their standards.

We hated The Core Institute. They were extremely arrogant to the point of it being a negative thing, they were rude, charged us the wrong amounts and then always demanded more saying the insurance rejected something. We went a total of three times and never had a good feeling. The Doctor was also very inattentive and dismissive when he was evaluating my wife's knee, to the point of belittling her.

We've switched over to The Orthopedic Clinic Association (TOCA) and have been much, much happier. She saw Dr. Richard Emerson and he referred us to his partner, Dr. Gerald Yacobucci because he specializes in her specific knee injury. He is doing her surgery this month. They were very calm and patient, doing a great job of explaining things.

I'm going to Curtis Miller, Canyon Orthopedics. He has been doing ortho surgery for 20 years and is also an ortho doctor for the Chicago White Sox for spring training (I'll wait until after the surgery to tell him that I am a Boston Red Sox fan - my cousin used to be an owner, so it's in my blood!). The surgery will be at Oasis Hospital, a small hospital in SE Phoenix that does nothing but ortho and spine procedures. His PA says it's his favorite hospital, so that's good enough for me!!

I think having confidence in your surgeon is so important. When my old ortho left town, I called Core, and they were so rude I never even made an appointment. Dr. Miller specializes in knee and hip replacements and each of Canyon's other doctors are also highly specialized. I like the idea of having a surgeon who has done literally thousands of hip replacements!

I wish your wife good luck with her surgery

Thankfully, it's only a ligament replacement and not a full knee replacement. It should be a relatively minor surgery. Any and all prayers are gratefully accepted, though. She's going to go stir crazy being laid up for four weeks! She's got the television, her heavily loaded Kindle, a large cross stitch pattern, some sewing and couponing she can do.

From what I've read, I should be on my feet the day after surgery! And home on day 3 or 4. I am fortunate that I telecommute, so I'll be able to work as much as I feel up to which should keep me from getting too bored. You will probably have your hands full with the kids - mine are all grown, so if need be, they will come and help me out until I'm back to "normal"

I know it's late notice, but if anyone is interested, we are hosting a Super Bowl Party 3:00pm tomorrow and everyone is invited, kids included. Bring your own alcohol and we request you bring some sort of side dish to share. Just PM me for the address and phone number. As a general location, we are about six miles Northwest of Arrowhead Mall.
