Arizona Chickens

We hated The Core Institute.  They were extremely arrogant to the point of it being a negative thing, they were rude, charged us the wrong amounts and then always demanded more saying the insurance rejected something.  We went a total of three times and never had a good feeling.  The Doctor was also very inattentive and dismissive when he was evaluating my wife's knee, to the point of belittling her.

We've switched over to The Orthopedic Clinic Association (TOCA) and have been much, much happier.  She saw Dr. Richard Emerson and he referred us to his partner, Dr. Gerald Yacobucci because he specializes in her specific knee injury.  He is doing her surgery this month.  They were very calm and patient, doing a great job of explaining things.

I don't blame you. I have had contact with only 2 of their doctors after we saw the one that left. Dr. Campbell was the one that did most of our surgeries. He was anything but that. My experience was the opposite.

I gave my Clare a bath to day, she looks terrible, she blow out her feathers and has a crop of new ones coming in. I thought that a bath might help the itchy sets of all those feathers. My hair dryer didn't turn on, so there I am with Clare rapped in a towel. I quickly rushed to the store and grabbed a hair dryer. I announced that I was in a hurry, my hair dryer is broken and I have a wet chicken at home I need to dry. I got a strange look from the cashier, Chicken? as I picked up my change I told her I have a few chickens as pets, one was dirty. Oh, ya, of course still not convinced I was all there. I think I gave her something to think about.

Clare had not moved when I got home. She really seemed to enjoy the hair dryer. When I lifted her wing to get under them I could feel her relax her wing and open slightly. The hole time she talked to me in that quite little sounds. Closing her eyes and seemingly sleeping for a few minutes at times.

Awhee, love that story.. Thanks for sharing..

How long before my 3 hens begin to accept the new PBR lady into the flock? They're not too nice to her.

I find it best to add 3 at a time.. They will have their own flock.. Sometimes anyway. I think each time we have added new ones in
they have acted different.. Our have plenty of room to run off if needed..
Did you put her in one they were in bed?

They also have lots of free space. And no, i didn't introduce her during bed time, should I have??? They just seem to be picking on her. I feel bad cuz she doesn't seem to understand why they don't like her!

Finally some new pictures of my girls. I posted one the other day of Dottie who has the smallest, most pale comb and almost no wattles. The other 3 are maturing more and consistent in that department. They'll be 20 weeks on Tuesday, standard hatchery RIR's. If they were production reds I would anticipate more egg laying behavior, but nobody squats, can't feel a gap in the pelvic bone, no interest in the nest boxes yet.

Snoop, my piggly wiggly (the food caked neck and chest!) in the front, Leticia behind her, Lemon on the right and Dottie my non-existent comb in the background.

Leticia in the front, Snoop behind her.

A great pic of Snoop's comb and wattles.

My little Lemon posing for the camera and showing off her big girl growth! She is our special girl, always just a step behind the others but I wouldn't put it past her to lay our first egg!

Miss Leticia posing too! I am hoping once eggs are eminent they will have a contest who lays first. So far they chest bump and neck feathers flare, but no one seems to be a dominant hen. They really do all get along fantastically!

Leticia on the left, Snoop on the right. Since Dottie got the spotlight the other day, she was being shy and let her sisters show off today.

Go into a fist fight with one of my meaties last night. Feeding time resembles a crack dealer showing up with his delivery on a street corner. I have taken to wearing a glove when reaching into the brooder. Last night one of them jumped at me as I was reaching in a nipped me. I figured I would teach "him" ( figuring hes a roo) a lesson. I smacked him back only to be nipped again. This went on for about 5 back and forths and I realized I was fighting with a 1/2lb chicken so I stopped. I looked him in the eyes and said "you may have one this battle but your gonna be dinner real soon". He cocked his head to the side and looked at me as if to say "really"?

When they are in bed it is less stressful on them, some say they wake up and don't realize there is a new bird. I think they do know, it is easier
for adjustment.. When a hen is broody & the time is up for the eggs to hatch we will add the day old chicks at night or the just hatched ones.
Last time our eggs were hatching the eggs were about a weeks time in difference.. So by the 5th day she was letting the new ones out from
under her to roam about.. Like 10 inches or so, not very far.. She was up in the hen house where most of the flock stayed away till she
brought them down.. Some followed, some didn't..
At night is best for introduction.. If she had 2 others she would feel like she has her own flock.. But probably at his point she is sticking out like
a sore thumb, so they just gang up on her.. That pecking order has its purpose.. She is now the lessor.. For us we would add 3 at a time..
We have only had to do this 1-2x.. When I got blonde our blue layer I found 2 other hens to add..
It has taken about 2 months for them to all JIVE together.. Our silkie Cheryl can't see as well so she gets pecked the most, I know that will stop
as soon as she hase her first babies..
We have a 2-3 pound, if that, lavender Ameraucana that had the last babies, she was telling our BCM that is 5x bigger to back away from the feed
yesterday.. She won.. So your girl will eventually fit in and figure it out..
Hope this helps.. :frow
