Arizona Chickens

Hi! I am new to this site and have never hatched or owned chickens before. My family lives in Gilbert on a 1/2 acre lot and I am ready to get some eggs to hatch. I want to grow the chicks and keep them for pets and laying eggs. We are trying to be more self sustainable. I ordered my incubator off ebay and once that gets here I will look into getting the eggs. I am trying to determine a few things. Can I get several different breeds of chickens to hatch together? What are the best breeds for laying eggs, not being flighty and enjoy being around people and being held that can handle our Az heat?
Thx!

Welcome! You will love this group - they have so much knowledge AND you are somewhat close so you can get together and talk chicken together - no better way to learn!! Enjoy.

I've been a lurker for a little over a year now and finally decided to join! My husband and I, and our 3 children (and 4 dogs, 5 chickens, and 2 turkeys) live about an hour south of Tucson. I have a lot of friends that have chickens and I convinced my husband to build me a coop last August. We've had a couple of losses since then, but I want to add to my flock this spring so we will be getting 18 baby chicks next week (hopefully only 2-3 of those are boys like I requested!). Here are a couple pictures of our current coop, my husband will be adding on to the back of it to make room for the new ones as they get older.

One of my favorite garden craft ideas is for making signs to indicate what the plants are. Find everyone who cans and ask them to save their old lids. You can glue them to the large tongue depressors or popsicle sticks to use as stakes. Then, you can paint them or just write the names on them as-is with a sharpie. Of course, you can go a bit fancier, too... These are regular tin can lids.

Wow! Great idea and they look so cute. Thanks!

Alright folks, it's the big day. My wife has her knee surgery this morning. Prayers are greatly appreciated.

Have a great day!

Prayers and good luck for her. I hope the surgery goes well and she can focus on the recovery end of things.

I got my staples out today - all 51 of them!! Dr took x-rays and said everything looks good, considering.

I will keep you in mind! I am alot south from you past green valley. (Rio Rico). I think I will be taking a few chicks this season to be ready at summer hopefully. I started last april and didn't get eggs till august sept. After the Turkeys are done. I will be expanding the "ranch" for more chix. Probably some meaties as well.

I know this is probably a long shot, but I thought I would post something up here too. I have a 5-6 week old French Black Copper Maran Cockerel (c1-c2 bloodline). I was wondering if anyone would want to take him. He is free. You can come pick him up, or we can always meet halfway somewhere. Heck, I'll deliver him if you are within the general Tucson area. If you are interested PM me. Thank you ^.^

We are in Rio Rico too! We have 2 turkeys that we originally thought were males a while back, but I think they are definitely female. They were supposed to be Thanksgiving & Christmas dinner, but they weren't big enough yet. We've been fattening them up with some cracked corn and homebrew and they are coming along quite nicely. I just saw one this morning picking on the other turkey and one of the chickens so that one may be the first to go.
