Arizona Chickens

Finally back on line. Just for the hick of it I desires it was time to see how far my IPad could fly. I (tripped) and broad my IPad. Just got it replaced. Now to read........ 2 weeks worth of posts. It may take a while. I hope Flower has been on to update on her operation. :hit She doesn't need me............ She really hasn't needed me for a week.

Remember the leghorn that was attacking us? Well, she was in a pretty hard molt for about a month and not laying. Two days ago she stopped attacking us and today she laid an egg. I'm glad I didn't cull her but I'll have to watch for another molt from her.

My Dottie that also attacked us for 4 days suddenly quit doing it. She got a couple real good whacks before I reached out for help on here. Since then she has been quite docile, squatting when reaching for her and actually almost becoming a loner. I wonder if her aggression was just a couple days of wanting to be top hen after someone laid and she then realized she really is the bottom of the pecking order and rightfully took her place. I feel a little sorry for her since she is so far behind the other 3 developmentally. I know she'll catch up but she seems a little out of place like she doesn't quite belong now.

In other news, first egg Thursday, second egg Monday, third egg Wednesday and TAAADAAA!!! We got TWO, count 'em, TWO eggs today! Yippee, that means I have 2 girls laying. One was obviously from the first hen, and the new one was much smaller and a different color, so pretty! I am on my way to daily eggs!! So excited!

Yay for the new eggs!

My next garden/coop project is to build the hens a dedicated dust pit. Right now they use "abandoned" garden beds, but those are about to be fenced from them and put to use soon. Is there any thing to...incentivize the gals to use this dust bowl over their other choice ones? I figure I should plant it like it means something to me, since they seem to love to destroy everything, lol.

Here are a couple photos of the chicks--the CX are at least triple the weights of the cochin peanuts. The CX are doing great, but have definitely entered the ugly, awkward stage. They still look adorable in the picture from last weekend!

I made my dust area and the girls took to it instantly... I added the dead tree and made sure the dirt was very inviting keepin it loose, dry, added a few kinds of dirt and sand as well as a little DE. As soon as it gets packed down they go back to digging up garden beds. I just use the garden tiller to loosen it and they go back to it... they love the shade and the tree for climbing.

Oh, question about mite and other parasites on feathers. If I brought home free stock roosters, brought right from car to killing cone, scalded the feathers for plucking, and then plucked...could those feathers that go willy-nilly around the yard where they might come in contact with my own chickens and infest them?

I'm seeing a lot of free roosters, and I really want a couple, but I don't want to risk infected my birds with parasites from the feathers. Is that a rationale fear, or would the scalding water take care of parasites? I think they'd be safe from respiratory and other virus/bacterial infections if I don't let the roos touch my soil and disinfect my shoes and clothing from another's chicken area.

Yes, that's pretty much exactly what I'm going to do!

That is beautiful! Nice photo, also. I bet your chicks love it!
