Arizona Chickens

I hope everything went well!
We are in Rio Rico too! We have 2 turkeys that we originally thought were males a while back, but I think they are definitely female. They were supposed to be Thanksgiving & Christmas dinner, but they weren't big enough yet. We've been fattening them up with some cracked corn and homebrew and they are coming along quite nicely. I just saw one this morning picking on the other turkey and one of the chickens so that one may be the first to go.
Yup, I have one Tom (Gravy) and one Hen (Din-Din). They started egg laying last fall, but have since stopped. They do get aggresive, especially when food is out. My daughter stays out of the way (3 yo) from the hen. Feel free to hit me up on FB and email. We can knock around some ideas and such. I feed Fermented feed as well. Makes the food last longer and does fatten them up.

Thanks for the well wishes. The surgery went flawlessly, according to the surgeon, although it took a fairly good deal longer than expected for both the surgery and recovery. Not a surprise, though. My wife seems to be the exception to every rule! Hah! Gotta love her anyway. She's painfully resting downstairs for the night. Hopefully, it'll be a smooth, easy sleep for her and the healing will continue. Thank the good Lord for blessing us with a trouble free surgery.

Have a great nigh, all!

Oops, nope. I just asked her and it was this place. https://www.facebook.com/FrenchHenAntiques
She has a great facebook page and seems really sweet. She might ship or would be able to tell you the manufacturer or where you might find them elsewhere.

Thanks! Found them...Paper Sharks Towels...and now I want LOTS of them!

Hi! I am new to this site and have never hatched or owned chickens before. My family lives in Gilbert on a 1/2 acre lot and I am ready to get some eggs to hatch. I want to grow the chicks and keep them for pets and laying eggs. We are trying to be more self sustainable. I ordered my incubator off ebay and once that gets here I will look into getting the eggs. I am trying to determine a few things. Can I get several different breeds of chickens to hatch together? What are the best breeds for laying eggs, not being flighty and enjoy being around people and being held that can handle our Az heat?
Thx!
We just started our chicken adventure in October, and we have our second hatch about to explode the incubator this weekend...23 barnyard mixes rocking and rolling in there! I love incubating because then they are used to daily handling, unlike my older flock.

Let me know if you need any eggs...but I won't have any pure breeds laying til the summer. We have a friendly Rhode Island Red roo over production reds, Easter Eggers, and Barred Rocks (LOVE my Rhodebars which are sex-able at hatch). My production reds lay almost daily and Rocks right behind them. The EEs lay the least, but I love their green eggs! Our flock is older...3 to 7 year olds but we average 4 eggs per day from 7 hens who gave us eggs all winter! If you have any questions you can PM me.

Also check out Aloha Chickens...I read that she offers hatching eggs in exchange for her choosing 1 or 2 pullets for her breeding program...and they are GORGEOUS!

BTW...

First egg Thursday, none over the weekend. Second egg Monday, nothing yesterday. Third egg today! The same small size and color as Monday's egg. This has me pretty convinced that only one of my 4 girls is laying.

Pic is taken with the rest of the chickens on my new tea towels (flour sacks). 2nd pic is of the rooster towel. I guess the poor Roos don't warrant having breeds mentioned. The towels are marked Paper Sharks circa 2013 RONI I bet if you are so inclined you can find them!

Roostereggs I'm glad you found them on your own! They really are adorable. My mom always called them flour sack towels, but others call them tea towels. Not sure what the difference is. I think they are the same thing, could be generational or regional I suppose.

Waiting for daily eggs and from more than one hen!!

This is the first sign of aggression I have seen in them, so I was a bit surprised. When we first got them in August we would pet them and they would fall asleep in our hands in 30 seconds. Oh well, we didn't get them to be pets anyways. I ordered some barley from the feed store in Nogales to make fodder, they haven't called me yet though.

Glad it went well, and hoping the recovery process doesn't take to long. :)

There are 2 8x10 sheds for sale for $150 on Craigslist and I am

that we can get one. That is cheaper than the lumber we would buy to expand our coop and would save us some time as well in building it. I have contacted 3 people selling sheds in the last week and they are always gone before we can get to Tucson or they never contact me back. I don't want to contact the seller at 7:30 in the morning, so hopefully by the time I call they will still have one and my husband can drive up after work tonight to get it.

Do any of you know where I can buy some Sulmet, Corrid or Amprol close to Mesa? I picked up some chicks this past weekend and I think they have cocci. :( bloody poo and one has died.

I don't want to order it in since it may be to late by the time it gets here! I should have had it on hand in case this ever happened! kicking myself now.

any help would be appreciated. I have no experience with this.

any help would be appreciated. I have no experience with this. Many of the feed stores carry sulmet; some carry corrid. Call around. If all else fails search stores farther out. Ray's usually has all kinds of stuff, but you cn probably find some at Mesa Feed Barn or Higley Feed or maybe the Pet Club off of Country Club (at Broadway?) Short term, add a bunch of AVC to their water--won;t cure it, but might help some.
