Shaun...I see that Laree claimed her first but if she doesn't want her, my son is doing silkies for 4h this coming year and we would love her, we even have a little roo that is the same age

Lots hatching here today, little babies everywhere. In the past couple of days I have hatched out ducks, guineas, 1 turkey(first of the year) and chickens...lots of littles here right now

hope everyone is having a great day

Just doing lunch. My DW is very sick with high fever and nausea... guess what the kids had finally got to her.

DS#1 is taking my car to discount tire to see if they can find a slow leak.

Anybody know of a good brake shop that doesn't charge an arm and a leg? Our Excursion has got to have new brakes.

In my limited experience, roosters don't cause bare backs, but take the blame a lot. They may break feathers and pull some out at the neck, but they aren't pickers, they just want to mate. The other hens are the ones who pick - hence the term "hen-pecked". It is a bad habit that spreads. IMO it may start when the rooster breaks the feathers exposing the fuzzy underfluff and that looks interesting to peck.

If these birds have some kind of infestation, then that may be causing them to pick. The RIR sounds like the chickens I visited at a friend's house the other day. If they were bare and red then they have something wrong. Mites, fleas, skin infection... something. Shame on them for having them in the petting area! I hope you washed your shoes before entering your own yard with your chickens!!

Ugh! It is upsetting that people just keep their chickens like that. It is gross, first of all, and unfair to those birds. If they are going to be "kept", then they should be cared for. Sheesh!

He swallowed one one evening as he was falling asleep and there were a few in the house... flew right down his throat.

You may need to go chat with your neighbors and see if this is really going to be a problem because once your pullets become hens they will ALL make very loud noises. When my hens let out their egg cackle it is every bit as loud as the rooster crows. Just saying...
