Arizona Chickens

Ha ha ha. I agree. I'm going Tuesday. I read the proposed changes and it seemed that the city council wanted to make things EASIER for urban farmers. Did I read this wrong? According to the current laws on the books, I'm way over the chicken limit. And the coop isn't far enough away from my neighbors house. And I think I have too many bunnies ....

That's my take on it too, but it seems there will be opposition and if people don't speak out in favor nothing will change.

Are you going Gallo?

I can't unless the date changes. Tuesdays are the one night a week that I have something going on. I hope everyone that can will though. I'm still feeling a bit burned by the House killing the fix at the state level. I made tons of calls and sent countless emails. Seems that some politicians don't care what we think.

Did anyone hear this in the voice of Thurston Howell III and Lovey? Seriously dated myself there.
I just read it to my husband and used just that voice...roflmao....too funny and so true.

although I have poodles and they don't bark all day but she has the right idea.

I wonder what she thinks happen with us here in the county??? I have never (knock on wood) had a bobcat and my whole yard is fenced so it keeps out the vermin that EAT my garden. I do not think by having fresh fruits, a garden, my flowers, my poultry etc that I am aiding in wildlife that would become a nuisance to my neighbors. If anything the only animals I worry about are neighbors pet dogs that they refuse to keep in their yards!!!!! funny how no one worries about the leash law but God forbid we raise our own food source.

I plan on going on Tuesday Sly. We should get as many of us as we can to go and make a stand.

They know that many people are in favor of urban farming, Tucson seems to be very tolerable as a city but the opposition usually has money to fight their campaigns so we need to go and show support in numbers as most of us backyard farmers do not have the money these nay sayers have.
I wonder where she buys her food? and how she thinks it is grown? ignorant people make me frustrated. how about they stop worrying about front yard gardens and worry about building houses in animal habitats? maybe they can fix up and rejuvenate the parts of Tucson that are run down with building new houses and cleaning them up and stop going more and more into wild animal territory for HOA's. That could be the reason for their wild animal nuisances instead of gardens and chickens!!! Ok sry I had to vent a bit......ppl like her just make me mad.

What really ticks me off in Marana is developers paying exorbitant prices for good fertile farmland and bulldozing it to build more cracker boxes. Profit before common sense, always. Not the farmers fault, they are struggling to make ends meet (thank you, big ag!) And the developers will pay far more than the land is worth as farmland. After all those houses are built, how do we feed the occupants? Big Ag to the rescue?

exactly my point!! I found out that most kids in my kids classes do not even know where their food comes from. Their is a push from big Ag and our govt to keep ppl like us down and out and take away our right to self sufficiency. I am sry but I like knowing what I am eating and how it was prepared and what has been used in and on it. I wish more people would wake up and realize this. Yes our country was built by farmers but what happens when they push all the farmers out? Big Ag does not a farmer make. a farmer works his land. (at least that is how I feel)

You know what really gets me mad is that this Colette Altaffer is NOT ignorant. She knows exactly what she's doing, and she's saying the exact keywords needed to get others onboard. I can guarantee she feeds her family VERY well and VERY expensively. She veils whatever self-serving reasons she has for opposing this update under the guise of serving the community. It's really sickening, considering how much of Tucson lives in extreme poverty and how the city's few wealthy can shut down anything that might make it easier to, you know, actually serve the community.

A farmer CULTIVATES the land, increasing it's fertility and productivity. Big Ag follows the "scorched earth" policy, ending up requiring chemical intervention for ANY productivity. What ends up on the shelves is chemical laden trash.

We're in the Gila Valley, near Safford. I believe it "can" get too hot. We have ours so they have plenty of shade, and when it's extremely hot this summer; we'll turn the fan on in the hen house. And of course water, water and more water always available. Hope this helps!
