Arizona Chickens

Alright, but you probably should sit down first. At O.K. Feeds I pay about $38 for a 50 lb. bag. I think the feed from Big Sky is cheaper, but I believe it's mash and not pelletized. I think the fermenters like it for that.

I last paid $27.23 for 50-lb of their 22% starter crumble, includes shipping. The corn and soy free layer pellets are a little less because only 17% protein. I mix those two feeds 50/50 to give to my layers so they get 19.5% protein. The growing birds stay on the 22%. Bear in mind I bought 100 bags at once, the shipping is a little cheaper that way, but not a whole lot. Their organic turkey starter costs me $30.59 with shipping, it is 28% protein.

OK, sounds a bit cheaper to order it direct. Will pick up a few bags from OK to start, then order direct from MM. Thanks to both of you for all the info>

Ouch! I can see where that gets ugly fast. So, a pallet of the 22% crumbles, and a pallet of the layer pellets, and we're talking about $3k?

Freight is expensive. They charge by the space as well as the weight from what I understand. Modesto will ship as few bags as you want or up to 50 bags on a pallet. My last order, shipping was $240. That was for 2 pallets. Actual cost varies depending on the products you buy. Shipping also varies with the price of gas.Their soy and corn free formulas are actually cheaper than the ones containing soy and corn, which is great, since I don't want the soy. Corn, I think that is too high carb and puts too much fat on them in our hot climate but I have no proof of that.

Yep, my last order was $2742 and they do not take credit cards. That was for 100 bags, I started ordering 2 pallets at a time because it is a royal PITA for the shipping company's big 28 foot truck to get in my narrow driveway and negotiate a turn-around. With all my growing birds right now, I'll use it in a timely manner. I don't like to store feed for more than 3 months.

Having residential delivery, depending on where you live, can be dicey. A 50-bag pallet weighs 2500+ pounds. You pay extra for residential delivery and a lift gate. I am really surprised they will put that many bags on a pallet. It is very hard to move, even with those pallet jacks on wheels. And it always gets stuck in the dirt here. They would like for me to have a concrete pad that they can drop it on, but so far are not telling me I have to do that for them to deliver. This is Estes Freight Co, not Modesto. If you have your own equipment, to handle moving a bulk bag, you can buy in bulk and save about $2 per 50-lb.

OK, so just rambling around the site, and some stats caught my eye. The where Am I....forum has a total of 1,083,345 views. Of those, 899,671 views are for the Arizona Chickens thread. Do we talk too much, or are we just popular?

Well, looks like I can buy it at OK for a while yet! My new place has a smallish hay barn where I can store feed, but I want to do some repairs and bugproofing before I start using it for that. Right now, I am storing my feed in 20 gallon plastic trash cans with snap on lids, They comfortably hold a 50# bag, but that's about all.
My birds are still growing, but right now, a 50# bag lasts about a week and a half. So, 100 bags, 150 weeks, 3 years?

I have the answer!! I JUST NEED MORE CHICKENS!

I keep a tally sheet of feed usage. Helps me when I order because I try to run out of each type of feed at the same time. So every Monday I count what isn't opened and subtract from the previous Monday. I'm using 5 bags of starter/grower every week. Plus 2-3 bags of other formulas. This is insanity
