Arizona Chickens

Well, looks like I can buy it at OK for a while yet! My new place has a smallish hay barn where I can store feed, but I want to do some repairs and bugproofing before I start using it for that. Right now, I am storing my feed in 20 gallon plastic trash cans with snap on lids, They comfortably hold a 50# bag, but that's about all.
My birds are still growing, but right now, a 50# bag lasts about a week and a half. So, 100 bags, 150 weeks, 3 years?

I have the answer! I NEED MORE CHICKENS!

Feed stores better in a climate controlled building when it is hot, which is most of the time here! Where I keep mine, there is an evaporative cooler plus it is completely rodent-proof. Very important!

Actually, I was thinking about using the hay barn for a coop. It's a little big for that, but there's always room for expansion, if needed. If I go the coop route, I will be putting a swamp cooler on it. Where I want to build the run is at the back end of the property, a pretty good distance away. Still fulminating and formulating......and even foaming at the mouth. My brother makes pretty good beer!

Yeah, my poultry area is a ways away from where I store the feed. So I keep metal trash cans in the poultry hallway for the in use feed, and another by the turkey pens, and ANOTHER in a storage bldg. near some grow-out pens clear on the opposite side. I get a lot of exercise just walking around my property

No, what I'm thinking is having the run attached to the haybarn/coop. There's a bunch of trees at the back of the property, making ideal shade for a run, but the haybarn is up towards the front of the property. I could move the haybarn, or make a really long run. Or I could build a new coop towards the back, and use the haybarn for something else. Whatever I do, I gotta get started building something to move the chickens into, so I can move out of the old house.

One things for sure, when you start raising/breeding chickens, you never have enough pens. One big long run is easier to deal with in terms of feeders, water, etc. but not very versatile if you are breeding and raising chicks and want to separate males from females or have different age groups growing up. If you just have a big flock for eggs/ meat, more space is always better.

Talking of feed, where in Phoenix can I find cheap whole grains? I want to grow some sprouts.
What kind you looking for? I get BOSS at PetSmart, buckwheat off amazon, lentils and flax at Sprouts. If this is for your chickens, you can also get bags of wild bird seed at PetSmart and sprout the seeds before you give them to the chooks. I sprouted about a pound of BOSS and gave it to the flock this morning, and yes, they went nuts over it!

Any kind, wheat, barley, oats...ideally I would like to find a local mill that I can buy in bulk and confident that the seeds are viable.

Hi everyone!

Does anyone know why chickens lose feathers? Or cough or sneeze or have runny noses. I wished I wasn't in this situation
