Arizona Chickens

Here is one of my Rocks is it a Cockerel or a Pullet, it is only 4 weeks and a couple days old.

I call him/her Brave because he/she is always the first to do anything lol

desertmarcy says cockerel, and she's a pro so probably right. But Brave looks like my barred rocks, and they both turned out to be females. The one below was older, probably 7 weeks at the photo? I can't find pictures where they were younger.

BYC keeps all the photos you've posted! I never noticed till just now, and my tie dye striped bodysuit pic from christmas is in there. Remember the bodysuit conversation? I think LKD started it and I just had to have one!! I still haven't been ballsy enough to wear the suit anywhere.

I don't know where you would wear it either, but it definitely makes a statement!

Not all sand drains well. Some (construction sand, that provides a stable base for building) does not. Play sand does.

Ah! Makes sense.

We'd be using sand from our creek if we put any in the run at all. It's pretty coarse as sand goes. The chickens already go down there when they free range and dig around in it.

The reason I ask, is because I was told to use river sand, but, I don't know if it has silica in it, because silica is supposed to be bad for the chickens lungs.
Also, trying to find out how people have liked the sand and if they have kept using it.  Most post about it are about a year old, know matter what forums I have looked on.

I use sand in my coop. I am happy with it although I have never had another bedding. Have used it since Last Oct when we got our first chicks. It's very easy to keep clean. The girls will dust bath in it. It doesn't hold moisture or smell. Although I have never used anything else I don't see any reason to change from sand.

Sand is mostly made of silica. There are notable exceptions, e.g. sand from some tropical beaches that are mostly calcium carbonate (ground up sea shells) and the sand from White Sands National Monument (gypsum). I don't think you worry about sand harming the chickens. I use the play sand from Home depot for the floor inside of my coop.
