My broodies are always wanting babies to hatch and raise. I just broke one... she was very unhappy about that. You never know when the next one will go broody, but if that appeals to you we can toss some ideas around.

Sorry Shaun, but our experiences with shipped eggs have not been good. It might work in other parts of the country, but here it just gets too hot in those big postal semis. I suggest you wait until November. Then it would not be too cold yet back east and not real hot here.

Good Luck,

Rufus

While pruning back some bushes today, I encountered a rattle snake. I don't know how I didn't see it, but I didn't see it until it struck at me. I used my ninja reflexes to pull my bare toes out of the way just as it hit. It was a VERY CLOSE call!!!

I put my foot down within 18" if it. If it had been any bigger, it would have gotten me. It was just a small 18 -20" snake.

Be careful out there, y'all!!

ETA - I am with Rufus on the shipped eggs.

Were you looking for something specific? I have week old ee's and slw. If your dead set on getting eggs, you can incubate here. I made my bator and it seems to do a good job. I've also been collecting eggs but I'm hesitant to hatch them because I still have all of the last hatch and a bizzillion other chickens I would like to re home. If you have a broody and up for the drive, you could have the eggs.

Greetings Fellow Arizonians,

The heat is on and it is HOT HOT HOT as you all are aware.
Any signs or behaviors I need to watch for in the heat with my birds? They are 5-8 months old and are free range during the day at night they go into the coop. They have shade and cool water available. Currently all of them are panting and one is making a funny noise when she pants. Should I be concerned?

quite a few of us use "misters" for the chooks in the summer. . . .I have an inexpensive one from Home Depot that is on 24 / 7 this time of year. I also provide a couple of shallow "wading pools" for my girls, and they love that too. last year they had frozen "blue ice" packs every day, but now I have a much larger, shadier area for them and they still seem very comfy so far. . . .no observable panting, and the egg laying is way up again after a couple of weeks of reduced lay and one "broody" gal that responded to the recommended treatment quickly and completely.

We picked up a couple of small individual misters at Ace Hardware on sale CHEAP! They are the ones you would put next to a chair to keep you cool..... kinda curled around in a circle to make them stand up on their own..... hook them up with a hose and just barely crack the faucet and you have instant mist to cool down a good little area. They seem to be working out really well for us.
