My week has been pretty crappy---but mostly "chicken crappy". The birds are still sick, we've had some more deaths, so before I decided to cull the flock I wanted to give injectables a shot. (no pun intended, really)

So last night DH and I load up the syringes, get the chicken vaporrub, DH puts on his miner's hat, and we tromp out to the coop. After some trial & error, the DH sticks the chickens while I hold them. About 10 birds in, we notice the OEGBs are paralyized--on the leg they took the shot in. Some of the larger birds too. They start dropping off the roost, & DH freaks out. REfuses to inject anymore birds until we see if the shot (kills) the bird.

So, I give everyone drops of VetRx in the appropriate places, clean up, and notice Dottie is eggbound. Woo hoo. Thankfully the egg was soft and the liquid had passed. All I had to do was pull out the membrane. Double woo hoo.

BUT: this morning all the gimpy birds seemed better, and no worse for wear. Lesson learned: OEGBs and younger/small birds need a HALF dose of the antibiotics. Also, put them in the nesting box so they dont topple off their pearch.

Mohonri - I too would be happy to help and have you in my prayers. Keep the faith. Somehow something good will come. Someone told me once, "i get excited when things get real bad, because I know a blessing is just around the corner." Hard words to put into practice, but maybe they can give you hope. I just know heaven is watching over you to strengthen you in your hardships.

Laree -

Hoping the flock gets better. Glad to learn from your experiences.

On a happier note. Things are going relatively well in my chicken world. The babies hatched from Mohonri eggs are growing and prospering. The juveniles (that's what we call the older ones) are also doing well, though their mother has determined they are adult enough to fend for themselves and is no longer protecting them. This has resulted in the grown hens kicking them off the roosts and night. It worries me some, but I wait and they sort it out. I put in a new low roost for them last night. The 3 cockerels that we got on loan from the breeder to be raised with the girls may be ready to go back this weekend. We'll see.

Tucson Tofu - how are your babies?

Nessa - we haven't heard from you in ages. How are you doing?

Sending happy wishes to all of you today, especially those in extra tough times.

My chicken situation here is driving me nuts! I have ne GLW sitting on silkie eggs that were due yesterday! Now they are on day 22 and I am hoping with everything I have that at least on hatches for my hen. SHe has been sitting strong for 6 going on 7 weeks now. That poor hen has been threw heck and back with eggs and no eggs and now eggs that aren't hatching yet.

On the other hand I have some more eggs that I got off of ebay and I don't think any of those are going to hatch. The seller is just terrible, I never got the eggs until I stared a claim. Non the less I have the 11 eggs, and half you can hear liquid shacking around in them (I think is a bad sign) one has a blood ring, the others I really can't see anything in them. So my money and time is wasted if not evenone of these eggs hatches.

With my ducks at least it is a little bit of a better story lately. I gave 7 of the week olds to there new home yesterday and kept two. The two that we kept are the smallest of them all, one being Gimp. He/she had a messed up foot but it got better and you can't even tell now.

We had three eggs from my duck left over that we threw in our incubator when she got off her nest. The first one hatched three days ago now and is doing great. This morning the second duckling was finaly able to pop out of its shell. The poor things was stuck and the membrane was shrink wrapped around her. I had to help her get out, so I just pulled the shell back last night. This mornign she was the same way and not moving much or anything. I pulled more of the shell back and the membrane that was stuck to her since it had dried out. I had put a wet paper towel on her to try and keep everything moist but it didn't work. Around 6am this morning she finaly was able to push the bottom half of the shell off. That was all that was left, I didn't want to mess with that part of the shell. Her eyes look a little small and has barely started to open them now at 10:30am. I have had her curled up on my lap all morning.

LareePQG~ LOL I know what you mean about stress, I swear my pants get smaller when i get stressed.

newchickmom09 - Hoping some of those eggs hatch for you, though the AZ group seems generally opposed to shipped eggs. I think others have had problems with them.

I forgot to add the details about Gimp. (please don't get affended by the name) After I asked what to do about him my hybby came home from work and I told him what we needed to do. Well, needless to say hubby said there is no way he is taping a ducks foot.

So in the end we didn't do anything to his foot and just left him. As of 2 or 3 days ago he was doing great. This morning I was out there watching while I was drinking my coffee and he can jump in and out of the pond no problem, run, and swim. You can't even tell really, the only time you call tell a hit is when he runs he kind of throws his legs out to the sides a little more.

But he is good now and we did nothing to it. Of course my hubby has to say I told you so.

I guess I have to give my hubby this one because it really is amazing how good his foot and leg are.
