BTW--those babies are SUUUUPER cute. If you go to my little website, you can post progressive shots of the chicks. That way we can get an idea of which are most "Aloha-ey" early on. (Yours are all new mixies, so I am really interested)

ETA: I just got an email from Cammy, (Elite Silkies) who is working on the Alohas with us. She hatched out 9 chicks on thursday (shipped eggs from me!)

ETA: the one marked Buff Orp COULD be a CM egg. Sometimes she lays light eggs--but it could also be from the late blue orpington.

Ugh. I checked the nest while the broodys were on their break late this afternoon, and there was another dead chick. This one was dry, and I couldn't see anything obviously wrong with it. This would be day 20, which isn't impossibly early. There were also four newly laid eggs in the nest, so I wonder if the poor thing got smothered when the other hens pushed in to lay their eggs. In case that was the problem, and I should probably have done this before, I took some leftover hardware cloth and propped it up so that the section of the coop they're in is fenced off.

I'm trying to be philosophical about it, if I hadn't have let the broodys have these eggs, they would have been eaten, and if the chicks that didn't make it were roos, they'd be going to freezer camp pretty soon. But even so, its disappointing.

So I thought I would post this for a good laugh. We are new to chickens and so far we love them and I mean love them!! I have 3 hens (two buffs and an amercuana). They are super friendly and so far we have been pretty lucky to let them free range around our yard. We also have 3 dogs that have been really fascinated with the chickens but are house dogs so they don't interact with them much. We also have our yard fenced off from where the chickens are and where the dogs can go when they are let out to go potty.

So here is the funny story. My husband let the dogs out in the morning and was doing something in the yard not realizing that the access gate to where the chickens are was open. One of our dogs decided that he wanted in the chicken coop with the chickens. Somehow he managed to make a hole and squeeze his large body into the coop. Now of course, this could have been disasterous but the smart chickens I have managed to get out of the hole the dog made un hurt and glad to be out in the yard to free range. These are the pictures I took when my husband called me out side and I came around the patio to see what the dog had done. LMAO !!!!!!!!!!

Is that the most pathetic look you have ever seen and how funny. The chickens were probably like hahaha and now you can't get out. It almost looks like the chickens locked his butt in there.

Needless to say he has not learned he better keep his butt away from the coop. But you have to admit it is pretty funny and cute.
The chickens didn't seems phased in the least. LOL

is that a beagle in there? i have a 2 year old beagle boy that just stares at the chickens through the chain link fence/gate that hubby put up to keep him out of their yard and coop. he managed to get in to the coop the other day when i went thru the gate with my hands full. fortunnately he didn't get any of my 9 week old chicks. he is such a bird dog. he howls at them, barks, just sits there patiently like they are going to come out and let him eat them. dumb beagle.

very funny your dog got in there and the chickens got out. lucky for them! great pics.

He is actually a mix of a Rott, german shepherd, and lab, but to me he looks just like a beagle with his markings and then on top of it he is really tall like a great dane. We are still amazed he got in there to begin with. He thinks he is a lap dog so I am not sure if he was actually trying to hurt them or not. But we are definitely not taking any chances either. He is such a sweet dog it would be great if him and the chickens could be friends but I don't think it would work that way with my other two dogs.
