Arizona Chickens

Funny. One of my black copper marans refuses to come out from the coop when I open the yard. it just paces back and forth at the open door while the rest make their rounds. I guess it is institutionalized.

A little hawk showed up and perched on the swing set. I guess it was deciding wether or not it could take a chicken. I chased it off then rounded up the girls. Cute hawk though.
Hawk's love chicken for breakfast, lunch & dinner.. They can't carry off your hen, but will tear them up on site.. Our rooster is not a big boy yet.. The Moma Clair alerts the flock to the 2 doves that come to visit.. He misses them flying above.. He is way to busy chasing Tiny, the jungle fowl.. Oh also, she keeps finding new spots in a potted plant.. The 2 junge fowl needs to find new homes.. She picked the pot with egg plant growing in it..

I had a hawk visitor with my previous flock, the girls started making a huge racket and when I went outside to investigate, there was a little hawk sitting on the block wall. It also looked like it was sizing up the ladies (easily twice his size). I shooed him away. Thankfully it never came back, but I always keep an eye out just in case.

Hi,
I am going to just build a new bigger coop instead of expanding the old one. But right now we have a net over the top of the old one, but it isn't big enough for the new one. So I need to make the fence taller. And I dont want to clip their wings, so How tall should I make the fence so that my hens and roos don't fly out?

We use bird neting above our run. 1.) for all the preditors that fly above, 2.) our spoiled brat's Tiny & Pretty, can fly from zero, to 7-8 feet in a instant.. However there is to many holes for them to escape to freedom "front yard play ground" so now that they figured this out, scratch the number 2.. Replace with it's cheep..

After I typed, "egg" "plant," I thought.. EGG-PLANT.. well, really she did. I did not make it up.. I did try to get a photo of her lying in the pot.. Actually eggplant leaves are poisonous to our duck's so I assume they are to the chciken's..

My NNs are getting so big! Just over four weeks old now and they've definitely out-grown the brooder. I've been putting them out in a mini-run during the day so they can stretch their little wings and get lots of fresh air while they acclimate. This weekend I hope to move them to the new coop.

@Ebove06 you might want to check them for mites, just in case. I've never had mites cause blood on an egg but have read that blood on eggs can be one symptom of mites. Probably not the cause of the blood but worth checking, just because mites are a pain in the butt for everybody. Pun intended.

hey everyone! I finally got the new girls to come out of the run today. I've been leaving the door open, for extended periods when I'm home, for weeks now. Today they finally ventured out. They are much more chicken than our last flock. I wonder if it's because we didn't raise them from chick. They were already about 3 months when we got them.

Now I just hope I can round them back up.

Making a tasty hefeweizen today also. Lots of wheat for the girls when I'm done using it.

I'm jealous of your weeds. The only place I have weeds in my yard is the areas where chickens and rabbits are excluded:

I would go at least 5 1/2 ft. My neighbor's hens jump up on her horse gate that is 5 ft. And then they're in the front yard, driving the other neighbor's dogs nuts. *
