Think of other hens for a pretty egg basket..

I'm doing this too this year :) I buy organic barley, what are you sprouting? I ordered some sprouting peas from Azure but they didn't send them with my Scratch n Peck food which I order every month. A tip: add some grapefruit seed extract to the rinsing water. It helps keep mold away.
I also add grapefruit seed extract to keep mold away!

If I don't get up there next week, I will definitely hit you up to bring me some of that duckweed. I have a kiddie pool just waiting for some. Sill was the one that offered to give me a start.
Yep, still got the duckweed if you want some. It's starting to produce a little now that its not so cold.

Hello all! I had the best, most friendly and curious hen named Beverly who passed away a couple weeks ago and I am heartbroken. I didn't want to have any more chickens for a while after her but a rogue chicken showed up in a neighbors yard just a couple days after Beverly passed and who else to ask catch her but the crazy chicken lady! So I scooped her up and she reminds me so much of Beverly it's very eery! I have no idea what she is (bantam something is all I know) but she is warming up to me and even has rode one shoulder for a bit after a good amount of coaxing.

Anyways so now I have a chicken (never found her original owners) but I want a friend or four for her to hang with. I have my heart set on naked necks (Turkens) but I have no idea where to get them from. If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them

Sorry about Beverly. Cool that you got another to fill in for her. I hope you're able to find some nice turkens.
Ty I am looking for a specific breed called mearn don't think I spelled that right hope she has some. I can drive to Pheonix no problem
Mearn's Quail are a species native to AZ. They are also mistakenly called Harlequin Quail. They are hard to find an typically sell for $450+ for a pair. It is illegal to take eggs or adults from the wild, except to kill them during a hunt. The chicks are notoriously difficult to raise, which probably is the reason for the price tag and rarity in captivity. They are probably the most beautiful quail there is though.

I hope you are able to find some.

Acctaully there was a story about chicken's running wild in a Phoenix neighborhood.. It was last year.. . Some neighbors liked them and some did not.. You would have to find the egg nest pile, or boy would you have a stinky find some day..
Last year we woke up one morning to yelling and a big commotion. One of our neighbors peacocks got out when a tree branch fell on part of her fence. It was funny to see all these men out there trying to round up 5 big peacocks! And those birds can really fly! Eventually they got them back into a temporary pen and everyone pitched in to mend the broken fence and trim the tree but it was great entertainment.
.. lol, what great excitement for your neighbors! I would loved to have had the opportunity to take some pictures of that and even record it for later! :P
Yeah, no whole foods here, but maybe next time my husband goes to PHX I'll hitch a ride that way I can nab some duckweed and grapefruit seed extract at the same time! All this talk of hatching chicks makes me want more chickens. I'm already at the max I can have. I do have a noisy rooster who might have to go away if I can't find a way to make him more quiet. He woke me up at 5:30 AM, the sun wasn't even up. I grabbed him off the roost, stuffed him in a dog crate, and covered him with blankets. He was quiet until I let him out. I tried tightening his no crow collar more but its difficult for me to do. I think I'm going to get my husband to help me tighten it more before tomorrow and I'll keep in the crate until we can get him muted. If that doesn't work I guess I'll have to give him away.
We tightened our boy's collar as well. He is still kind of loud.. So we did exactly what you have done.. Once he is up with his girl's, I take him and put him in a small cage, cover him with stuff.. Kind of works..
. . I found that I have to tighten it may be another eight to quarter inch to make it more efficient and muffle their ability to get more air out to make a Loud sound. It does work, but you have to be consistent to be checking it till you get it just right. I've got 3 Roos wearing no crow collars currently.
papa bator test hatch in progress! Two babies and one zipper so far!
Eggciting!! Can I have one girl! :)

Well, my rooster has gone to join his brothers at a farm about 30 mins away. So I'm sure he'll be fine. I have the collar still, but I won't be needing it. I was already dealing with a pretty bad situation with our dogs so I just didn't need more stress.

I get woken up every morning by my daughter's dog around 7. He barks until I let him out. But it takes 10-15 mins because I have to feed the other dogs and puppies then let out the chickens out to the other side of the fence, before I can let him out. So the entire time I have to tell him to be quiet while moving everyone to where it works. He turned aggressive when he matured and now attacks my other daughter's dog, a female. Its frustrating, but she is moving out soon so I will just deal with it. She is likely going to have to give the dog away anyway because of not being able to take him with her to college.

Needless to say, I didn't need to add the craziness of a crowing rooster on top of all that. I didn't want my neighbors complaining about him. They are already putting up with the dog barking.

On a good note, I got 3 eggs today. Woohoo! My ladies are doing well and their eggs are getting more regular.

In order for dog's to bond together you have to walk them together as a pack.. Along with the HUMAN being the leader.. Although you know her dog is leaving, a walk will make the more aggressive dog tired.. It is really extremely important that the dog does not walk, leave the house or yard unless the pack leader, "the human" say's so or leads the exit/walk.. Once things slow down for you, which is just a sentence.. I'm sure it could happen.. Take time to enjoy the out doors.. It is beautiful here now...
Glad you found a home for him..

This is a strange situation with the female and male dog. They have been together his entire life and he is just over a year old. She is maybe 1 1/2 or 2. They had puppies. When she was having puppies I moved her inside because it was winter and I didn't want them to die. So after a few weeks, we moved them outside. I think he's jealous, but now that she is back outside, he attacks anytime they are near each other. Because of my elbow injury, I can't handle them on leashes and no one else has bothered to lift a finger to fix the issue. So to avoid problems, I just keep them apart. I'd love to be able to train him to tolerate her again because he is a super intelligent dog, but I just can't do it physically.

Yeah! My hatch ended with the last "birth" occurring around 3:00 AM this morning. All 9 eggs I put in lockdown hatched successfully, though I had to help chick #8 as it was "breech" in its egg and couldn't get out on its own. I wound up with six Bielefelder males and 3 females...not quite the ratio I'd hoped for, but they're very healthy, lively, and very sweet chicks I can breed from to increase my flock size. Here's photos of the first 8. Chick #9 - a girl - is still working on becoming "fluffy".

OK -- I have a hankering for some salmon faverolles. Someone stop me! I've pretty much settled on silver-laced Wyandottes, Welsummers, and bantam black Wyandottes, but everyone needs a white/cream egg layer too! Anyone know somewhere locally I can get some?

* Locally?¿ I wish. I'm on a Wait List for Salmon Faverolles. End of April, I'll be getting mine. Unless I find some sooner. May end up with more than 5 but oh well. *
