Arizona Chickens

Beautiful! Is that your garden?
Yes, such as it is. It's messy, informal and a work in progress. Ongoing projects always are happening so it's never really "neat". But I love plants so have to tinker with them.

Moringa trees will grow here but always freeze back in the colder months. Then regrow - I keep hoping the trunk will get bigger and bigger - so far not happening but I keep working on it!! Your plants are lovely - wish we had the growing climate of Tucson!

I'm in Tempe. Moringa only has to be protected as young trees. I usually cut the moringas to their trunk and cover them with frost cloth. This year as an experiment I didn't cut back the biggest tree, now three years old and about 15-20 feet tall, and it did not die back at all. It even kept some flowers but lost 75% of the leaves. We had frost on the roof next to the tree many mornings this winter and the tree is fine and now leafing out well with the warmer temps. In colder weather it can freeze down to the roots but quickly regrow with warmer weather. In areas where the ground freezes they will die, and they must have warm temps in summer or they stop growing. Our climate is perfect for them and they thrive in poor soil.

Lmao. Nobody get it yet?

Have to say the words all together to get the joke?

Handsome dude! Is he pure bred? Not sure what his color is, a splash maybe?

Thanks for the response, do the moringa trees drop alot of leafs?
Us humans and the animals usually eat the leaves before they can drop. They are very nutritious. Just google it and see! We should all have at least one of these trees. It's said if you have no other food you could live off eating from this tree.

I did not know about moringa trees. I am in casa Grande and will plant some. In the past I have used bamboo it also grows from tubers quickly. Shade is a blessing with the heat here.
They grow super easy from seed and we get about 75% germination.

If you ever come this way we have extra moringa seed's, or PM us your postal address.. I'll send them in the mail to you.. It is nice quick shade, all edible, no fuss, low water, low maintenance.. Plus in the winter if you have other stuff growing the leaves die back for the sun to warm the soil & chicken's.. You know those chicken's, just like our dog's... They sunbathe daily..

I've been trying to get my Moringa seeds to germinate and grow for a few weeks now with no luck. I've tried growing them in coconut coir, potting soil and compost but they just won't sprout. What am I doing wrong?
