Arizona Chickens

On another note, can anyone tell me where roosters are legal to have in the state? Up to this point all the zoning I looked at in Maricopa county and the cities says "no roosters". Unlike back east I don't believe there's a "agricultural" zone; I've only seen residential, business, and open space, and I believe you have to apply for open space zoning. I'd love to breed a couple of chicken varieties in the future but I can't find anyplace where that would be legal. If anyone could point me in the right direction I'd sure appreciate it.

Unincorporated Pima County - GR-1 (general rural, 1 acre minimum) allows roosters. RH zoning probably allows them too (4.13 acre minimum).

Be careful if the property is in a subdivision with CC&R's (deed restrictions), because those restrictions might affect what animals you can or can't have regardless of the zoning. A property doesn't have to be in an HOA (homeowner's association) to have deed restrictions against animals. You don't have to be too far out of the city to find zoning that allows roosters. If you want to be in an urban area you are out of luck.

Hey all! I am on the Mesa/ AJ line here! Unfortunately my Golden Campine "pullet" started crowing with VOLUME this morning. He is only 6 weeks old, so I have another month before I can report him to the company I got him from and get my money back. Is there anyone that would be interested in trading for either a Marans or Cream Legbar pullet around the same age after I report him? I would like something other than light brown in my egg basket when the rest start laying. He should be show quality.

Or some kind of olive or green egg layer. This is the boy i am talking about

His legs are a beautiful slate, he just won't stay still long enough for me to get a clear pic.

If you can't find anything restricting you from having roosters, all you really have to do is check with your neighbors. Also, check the zoning of your property, if it is zoned agricultural, there is really nothing that can stop you legally.

Ok, good deal - I like hearing that and thanks much for the info. I know what you're saying about HOA's/CCR's/Deed restrictions - I've been avoiding them like the plague all my life. Urban living ain't my cup-o-tea so that's not an issue. I live on a Rural 43 property now but it's only an acre and I don't know how my neighbors would feel about a rooster. I found out one of my Leghorns is a he so I guess I'll know soon because I don't want to eat him just yet. But going forward I'd like to have a couple of breeding flocks going on so I need to start planning now. Thanks again for the info.

just found a home for my own rooster problem but may have an extra CCL I could sell, it'd be new hatch though, lockdown is tomorrow and they're due Fri. Will probably list extra chicks on here when hatch is over.
