That's a lotta chicks! Our BJG haven't shown any inclination to broodiness, but our game hen(Junglefowl) is our broodiest, then our Aloha. Were hers a surprise? Our JF hatched eggs in November last year(I'm a little ahead of myself, lol), unbeknownst to us until the final 2 days! They were lovely mixed breeds ;)

My DH fell in love with the standard sized polish. Before I go looking - how are they with the heat?

I know of a few people who keep Polish flocks and none have reported any heat problems. I have a rooster that's 1/2 polish and he does very well in the heat...but if you get a Polish rooster be prepared for that sucker to crow A LOT.

Told DH about the crowing - and he just innocently said - "I was only looking for Polish hens". LOL ! Guess I'll put some feelers out!

Is it common for a hen to stop laying when it gets over 90 degrees? After this last week our two hens that had been laying nearly every day stopped laying.

My Bielefelders stop laying for a while when it gets too hot, and then start up again once either they've adjusted, or once the temps drop again. This breed is very heat sensitive, so they lay better in cooler temps than heat, whereas the rest of my girls are more heat tolerant and rarely slow or stop their laying. It can be a breed specific tendency.

Do you still feed them scratch? I know when it gets hot out you shouldn't feed them scratch. It makes it difficult for them to cool their systems and can have a toll on their laying. Lots of fruits veggies and water should help.

It is not uncommon. Depends on the birds. One line of my black javas stops laying in the spring (they stopped a few weeks ago). My other line of black javas lays most of the summer but egg production slows down in the heat.

Ours slowed down when it got over 100, but then picked back up for the most part when they acclimated. But days over 110, or following days? Production was way down. Can't blame them. We picked breeds last year that would do best in the heat. This year we got some that may not do as well, but they aren't due to start laying till fallish...so I guess we'll see ;)
