Arizona Chickens

I cant want for 3 more weeks to go by then the most of the hot will be gone for us up here.

I used to live in Mesa/Phx/Tempe and I won't move back there at all...sorry guys it is hot enough up here. I really would love to live even farther North but we disided a long time ago to keep the kids near the grandparents...and that has worked out great, soI get to live where we do. Really most of the time it is great.....just been hot for too many days

I hope you all find a way to stay cool...HAPPY Friday all

Gretchen

Greetings and Salutations! I wanted to properly introduce myself here in the AZ thread. I first stumbled upon BYC and this thread the first week of Nov. 2009 and got my first chicks the first week of Jan. 2010, after I had read every post here. I must say thank you to all who have posted here. I grew up raising all sorts of poultry in the Midwest, but as we all know, raising birds here in AZ requires a bit of extra thought and preparation. I learned from the wisdom of you long-time chook wranglers as well as the mistakes of the newbies. My chickens are better for it. So, after 9 months of lurking, it's good to be here. Thanks, Todd.

Hi guys! First I want to say welcome to all the new people!

Thank you to all that have asked about me. I appreciate that. I didn't fall off the planet. I am still here. I have just been super busy with trying to get everything going in the right direction in my life. THINGS ARE AWESOME!!!

As for the chickens, well, I have just been kinda disenchanted I suppose. I have to be careful what I say but the refugee chickens have taken quite a lot of wind out of my little chicken sails. I will say that I won't be doing this again. I knew better before I did it and I know it even more now. I will no longer be able to sell anything from my property until I have completely chemically burned out every inch of my aviaries. I have had to overhaul all my systems to save my own. Thank the Lord that my birds have not suffered from my moment of weakness. I did lose my beloved Scramble which was my golden laced polish. I lost her to the heat and old age though so no worries folks. I have gone to great lengths to save the refugee chickens. Lengths that I should have never even considered. Some were treated back to good health and sent back to where they came from and others had to be sent to chicken heaven (I like to think there is one) I hate culling with a purple passion. It is a horrible necessary evil. It hurts my soul and it is probably the major reason why you guys have not heard from me. What hurts me the most is I was lied to in a huge way. I made it perfectly clear what I was willing to do and accept and that was not respected at all. There was no way for me to know this until after the fact. Sorry I know it may seem as if I am talking in circles but some here know about the refugee chickens. It is not just the chickens but some people involved in the refugee chicken fiasco took it upon themselves to come and visit the birds while I was not home and they walked in places they never should have with their nasty little flippin boots on and caused major problems. None of the birds would have lost their lives if this had not happened. There was nothing wrong with any of them until after they walked their disease ridden boots through my aviaries! Okay I am getting angry so I will just say this:

Please do learn something here. Nothing is absolute and people are deceptive, even the nice people sometimes. NEVER RESCUE ANYTHING! Unless of course you are fully prepared to suffer the consequences that may arise from it.

I will be changing some things after this little EVENT is over and things are safe and back to normal. I want to just get me some seriously good layers and do the egg thing. I have folks beating the door down so to speak for eggs. I will be selling nesting boxes, coops, feeders, waterers and so on when the weather cools off again. I will never abandon chickens altogether because after all they did save my life long ago.

I hope that everyone is doing well and that the chickens are staying cool. I will try to go back and read through the thread and get caught up but it might take me a few days. This thread moves really fast sometimes.

OMG I forgot to share the best news of all. May 14th I QUIT SMOKING!

I really did quit. I didn't cheat. I quit cold turkey with no gum, patches, sprays, inhalers, electronic devices....NOTHING! I have been a smoker since I was 14 yrs old and I am 34 now. Only other times I ever quit was during each of my pregnancies (2). All my cravings are gone and God is good. My house smells so yummy and my clothes do to!

Well, it is hot here. Yesterday I took a sick day. I think I was sick from the heat. I woke up that way. It was weird. Too dizzy to drive to Phoenix from Mesa. I drank and got some gatorade and took potassium and did a bad job of staying indoors...must check in chickens. Usually I am at work during the day. I was sad to see how very miserable the chickens were in the heat. They survive though. As for me, it took me until evening to stumble on the obvious...even though I wasn't miserably hot...or didn't think so...dropping the thermostat at home a few degrees perked me right up.

Duh! Of course, I should have also done a better job of staying out of the sun.

Nessa - So very, very glad to hear from you! I was startled when I realized it had been months since you had posted and was quite concerned. I am glad things are going well, despite the bio contamination issues.

Tonopah Patti - Someone asked about her, so I sent her an email from the link by her user name. She reports that she continues to struggle with a variety under-the-weather issues.

Gallo del Cielo -

and Welcome to the AZ thread

Mohonri - enjoy the trek..and the vacation!

How to stay cool in the heat without A/C from my great grandmother: dip a sheet in the irrigation canal and wrap it around you. I will see if I can get more of the ones she shared.

Funny you should say that. We had a tree limb break off and fall on our shed last Friday. No wind or rain, either.
