Arizona Chickens

Picked up the last two that hatched last night. That makes 35!! I had covered the grate door (this brooder is also a mini coop) with plastic and they figured out this morning that the sun on the plastic makes it nice warm. All seem to be doing really well so far. :)
WOW ARENT THEY SO CUTE

:goodpost::highfive::thumbsup i would add Delawares & road island whites do well here & thanks excellent information for CLINT and all the rest of us as well, i was hoping for a good broody breed of hen, i wounder do you think the Silver Grey Dorkings, would be a good choice for that..?my brooding area is cooler cooled and well ventilated and is quite comfortable for this purpose. it stays around 80 degrees every day i made sure of that and Bisbee is always cooler then most all other parts of AZ with out the extreme colder winters, we usually have nice warm winters here like this year, so which ever broody breed would be best for my main broody girls im sure will be happy here.

I have several hens of multiple breeds that go broody - one White Rock that has raised three small clutches for me, a very persistent buff Silkie, a few NNs, and yes...my Dorkings definitely go broody. What I've found with the Dorkings is that regular egg collection throughout the day cuts down significantly on the broodiness, but if you leave those eggs in the nesting box a little longer, they will quickly turn broody. So far none of them have been mean broodies with me. They'll fluff up and growl, but no serious pecking of my hands....unlike one of my NNs. She'll strip the flesh from the bone if given a chance.

Will do! So far, so good. I made a separate cage area in the coop for them, so the other girls can see them and be around them, but can't get to them. We'll let them free range a bit tomorrow under supervision, then keep them in the separate area when they go back in the coop.

Good! You seen the adults, so you know how big they will get. Your hubby looked like he was falling in love with my Splash girl. I need her for future breeding though. :D

Yep, the cure for chick fever is to get more chicks! Now start working out your chicken math! :gig

O GOLLY your Dorkings sound just wonderful and like what i was looking for , my aussies do go broody and are very good about no pecking they are very sweet so i had one aussei and one young Delaware side by side they were good & let me check for any fresh eggs under them every day ...lol.. this was last summer , but because of the heat i was worried for them & moved them to a cooler & more privet area, they were in the favorite nest boxes...lol.. and did fine with the move for about a week , then after another week or so they walked away 2 weeks in ..??? and now i dont trust them to stay on the nest, but i am building a broody palace ...lol... just for a broody mama & her chicks , so if you ever wanted to sell any of your Dorking hens..?? to a great home , i would be beyond happy to have one or 2 which ever , they will have a great home here with me as long as they live ..! so its up to you , just let me know , but no pressure & no worries , take care and have a great evening :highfive::thumbsup:frow:woot

Questions for those that use misters:

Do you have them on a timer and if so how long do you cycle on/off? If not how long do you leave it running?

Thanks!

Yes, I put mine on a timer during the months that the temps are 100 or over during the hottest parts of the day that match that. I put it on the timer so that way if I have to go somewhere I don't have to worry about it. Just make sure that the misters are away from the coop. In the daytime, they will go over and stand in any water that falls to the ground. It helps them to keep cool.

:frow i sure do ;):D , but o golly dont get me started....lol..HA View attachment 1253297 ok i will go look for a few pics to post, this first necklace above was from my goddess collection i made from used electrical copper wire & Bisbee blue turquoise, its my favorite and i kept it for my self , i hand made all of it including the chain & clasp. i made some very heavy copper belts, of this type design but with some larger turquoise nuggets on them .next i made a lot of art frames out of dried desert weeds & using an old x mass card of angles, i also made a cuckoo clock like that same type design of dried desert plants sticks vines & twigs with tiny elves walking up a real quarts crystal stair case leading to the door way under the clock face were the elves that keep the clock running live :D..lol.. i just though id toss in some other pics, of the mediums i worked in, over the years, i also have worked in clay, metal, wood, plaster, rocks, feathers Ha yeah right feathers , most people dont usually have lots of feathers lying all around their yard...lol.. & lastly in art photography & even more i have created over the years as gifts , and creative gifts of food HA but i cant remember it all HA, plus some was lost when we moved from state to state , so the list goes on , into infinity for me since its always all about the next design from an un tapped medium for me , its what makes me happy , i tend to make several pieces in a row of the same medium & type of design form , then i get tired of it , so there are just a few pieces left of each as all good things must come to an end...lol... and then the next art design wants to come into the world and so it goes, any thing found i like i use as or in an art project..lol.. i never buy any thing from the store for my art protects & use only what i find , except for maybe a tiny bit of paint that some one years ago had gifted me , but i have made my own paint to , since im pretty driven when the art energy comes around & some thing from out of the ether's wants to come into physical form & picks you to be its creator...lol.. im sure all you artists out there know exactly what i mean , & when that happens i dont eat or sleep & forget to drink water ...lol.. nothing like getting really involved...lol.. right HA:lau:lol::p, well so these are only pics i have of some of my different art, plus shadow boxes i made with dried flowers & leaves & other desert dried plants along with the image of a flower fairy princesses out of the realm of dreams , sorry that pic was not coming up..? , plus i also made round boxes in this same type art form they were my fairy boxes but not one is left they were all sold and not one pictures exist of then , next is my yule solstice card, i just wanted a different kind of holiday card...lol.. so from the last of my flying saucer squash & tiny tomatoes in my garden that year, i created this yule solstice card, but sorry im still looking for my other jewelry pics, i think i have them all on a different CD some were...????? i will look for them . i dont have pics of all the jewelry i made over the years since some sold before i could take pic's of them, & because i didn't have a good working camera at the time.:hmm:rolleyes::p View attachment 1253297 View attachment 1253299 View attachment 1253311 View attachment 1253311 View attachment 1253299

I wish mine would go broody someplace where I could collect the eggs. My birds start laying under the deck when they about to go broody. And I am not about to crawl under there to fish them out.

Edited to add that I have nightmares about piles of rotten unhatched eggs exploding under the deck... Yuck!
