Arizona Chickens

The problem is with the breeders that baby these birds, treat them, and then breed them. There's a big difference between a little preventative care, and bringing a bird back from near death from some disease, then breeding it because it had the perfect tail shape. If they still get sick even after the preventative care, then they are weak and only perpetuating a weak genetic line. This is why I feel so conflicted when I go to poultry shows, as I see so many mutated and sickly birds winning awards, but I still go.. It's like morbid curiosity.

Then, the parent bird(s) and all those offspring should be culled. How many generations would it take to breed out that defective gene, if possible? Also, who is carrying that cootie...the male or female? Maybe swap breeding partners and see what the next generation brings.

No binge watching here. My husband was t-boned a couple weeks back so I'm not his full-time caretakers, plus running our little farms, plus running our business. I'm pretty much exhausted from the moment I wake up until the moment I go to bed. This is what one incompetent driver left of my husband's car:

He spent three years customizing and perfecting this car, his dream car since he was 16... a 1974 De Tomaso Pantera (Ford of Italy). The car's total, but amazingly my husband survived, but requires a lot of care.
Oh my gosh.... I'm glad he is better then his car.. Sorry about the car I know how disappointed he might be, but glad he is still here.... take care

And this is where good record keeping comes into play. I am the spreadsheet queen when it comes to tracking my birds because EVERYTHING could be relevant genetically. It also pays to be patient before breeding a bird, waiting until it's at least one year old to know what kind of surprises may appear in adulthood. I've had quite a few birds I simply adored and would have loved to have babies from, but a full year of observation showed me issues I found to be either questionable or downright alarming. Other birds I've bred for my own curiosity of the outcome for learning purposes, knowing I'd never sell chicks or hatching eggs from them, and then culled them so as not to perpetuate problems in my flocks. That's helped me learn a lot about their genetics very quickly.

Thank you for sharing. I'm glad I use apple cider in the water already.

Yep! Love the apple cider vinegar! I also use oregano oil from time to time, and in the summer I'll put copper sulfate in the water at least once per month. They get herbs and garlic in their feed, and probiotics on a regular basis. If a bird suddenly seems dumpy and I can't figure out why, I may perform an Epsom salt flush, but I can count on one hand how many times I've had to do that to any of my birds. I have four year old birds that look as vigorous and healthy as their first year and still give me 4-6 jumbo eggs per week without fail. Those are my best breeders because they've proven their hardiness and vitality.

@meetthebubus we just finished binging on The Office for probably the 10th time lol (it never gets old!) Right now I'm watching old episodes of Roseanne...and I am a HUGE Friends fan...that was going to be my next binge! My husband likes to make fun of me for rewatching the same shows but hey, I know what I like. Haha

What kind of chickens do you raise again?
