Arizona Chickens

How long after the 21 day egg incubation do you usually let momma sit on the egg. I've only had a momma just leave the egg - or push it out - something that is obviously an abandonment. Today is 22/23 - Thinking take the egg away by Sunday?? Thoughts
Well she kicked the egg to the corner and was dealing with the other two babies. Don't think its a problem now! Thanks for your thoughts......

I haven't done any training but many of mine "know" their names. I know its silly. Here's what I mean; my DH is in a wheelchair. He loves sitting in the chicken yard talking to the chickens and holding at least one on his knee. Usually it is Maple - she's one of my older girls. I say "Maple go see daddy - he wants to hold you" She then goes to his chair and stands until he can pick her up. She is patient as he's not always smooth picking her up but she always goes to him. He can call her too. Also our NN Lady who loves him dearly. I'll have to look for a pic of him holding one of the girls. Beaming!

That's such a sweet story, I don't think it's silly at all they can learn their names and understand body language, and signs

I've found that they learn their names pretty quickly even without intentional training, and the longer you have them the more cemented their names become in their brains.

@SonoranChick mine have never liked peas either I think they might not have a good scent frozen maybe? I recently tried steamed carrots that were chilled they like that better than raw carrots and its soft for them to eat
Oh can't forget cold grapes it gets so noisy feeding them grapes bc they are all chatting about it
But grapes you need them to be on sale I try to stock up when they are like 80 cents per lb.

Anyone on here, have you taught any of your chickens their name or done training with them?
A few of mine (the RIR, Delaware, and leghorns) seem to know their name and will come running when I call for them. I'm still not sure if they know their names, or know that I might have treats :p The Delaware will call to me when I'm walking up to the run, before I am visible. If I holler to them she always sings back, with a specific call. Today when I was in the run, a very unlucky cricket managed to hop through the fence and into a log. The Delaware and brown leghorn sought it out and chased it, with the Delaware being the victor. After a hilarious chase, she finally ate it. The leghorn immediately went right back to the spot in the log to see if any more crickets were coming out, she remembered that's where it was hiding! Chickens really are much more intelligent than most people give them credit for. Mine impress and surprise me all the time.

@SonoranChick I recently did a research paper and
Marc Bekoff PhD, observed in “Animals Matter”, that in science they consider an
animal intelligent by the factors if “they can count objects, locate hidden food and are able to
elude clevor predators”

So that goes along with your cricket story, they are intelligent

All 27 of my chickens know their name some are still learning it well , but all the time I'll call for a specific chicken and that one comes and they have the expression you called?what ya got for me?

My family didn't believe me at first until they saw it Roo had his back turned and they called Roo, and right away he turned and came over although they do remind me of cats in that sometimes they will ignore you when you call

China was the first to show me that chickens learn their specific name she is the most intelligent of all my bubus but my ee Cleo is a close second

Also I taught them signs, simple but easy to communicate signs like 'all gone' and sign for i want to pick you up

Also in a whole I call for "bubus, bubus" and they all come running then, I love to see them turn the corner running

How do you mean? That sounds interesting:)
I had read an article about it in one of those poultry magazines. This lady listened carefully and noticed that there was a sound her birds only made when she showed up. As if they were all saying: Hey look! "Human lady" is here! They never made that particular sound at any other time.
