Arizona Chickens

He stopped coming here after the garage incident, he's been on the site I saw him on another thread wasn't quite happy with that thread.... or him

I was out with dogs after hubs left for work and he called to tell me not to let the chickens out for a while. He almost hit a coyote at the corner and chased it down the street with the car. Not to run him over but to move him along to somewhere else. I can hear some neighborhood dogs barking now so he must be on the move. Haven't seen any coyotes here in a long time. I have heard that dry conditions are pushing animals into human populated areas so be vigilant even in the burbs!

I did the same thing a few weeks ago. Pushed it down the street away from my house.

@meetthebubus my girls are currently getting watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumber and frozen pineapple. They also get herbs from the garden when I trim them. They really like mint and chives. I gave them some leftover tomatoes the other day, but remembered reading something a while back about them being bad for chickens...is this true? They were fine after eating them but I may need to do some more research before feeding them tomatoes again.

@SonoranChick I was just looking up info about tomatoes, even though I have given some to mine last year.... Tomato, pepper and eggplant leaves as members of the nightshade family, they contain Solanine, just like potatoes, so you should try to keep your chickens off your plants. They can, however, eat tomatoes, peppers and eggplants.

So, they should be ok, as long as you don't let them have the stems and leaves of the tomatoes.

@SonoranChick Geez I hope tomatoes are not bad for them!! I froze so many tomatoes from Pow-Wow that I wondered if I'd have room for other things. I've been able to get "extra" grape tomatoes and such when I go because they save those for feed or compost for anyone who want to take them. I take some. Last time I took extra eggplant and my girls do not seem to like eggplant. DANG anyhow. Pow-Wow is a good deal if you have a chance. $10 bucks for 60+ pounds of food. Much of it is organic too.
Mine don't like peppers either - DARN...….

Thank you! This is so helpful! Now I don't feel bad, I just gave them the tomato but not any part of the plant.

Good idea, I will freeze mine as a cold treat for them.

Yep tomatoes are fine, my roosters like them best, I had one that wasn't rotten, but getting a bit old and mushy and EVERYONE loved it, the little ones were very verbal about it :gig
