Arizona Chickens

I noticed that you mentioned the BBS/EE. Are the BBS being used silkie? I believe those are how someone was developing the one's that they are calling a Chicquita and are breeding those up in Scottsdale. I seen a splash one pictured before and was impressed! Beautiful bird!
The lady I got them from has a BBS=blue black splash hen’s & EE hen’s & if I remember correctly Araucana Hen, so I am thinking 1 of her hen’s is the Araucana & cockerel is the EE.. idk they are all grey 7 1 with the cheek muffs and 1 kinda cheek muffs.. we don’t have a cockerel so I got the chick’s at about w-w day old.. it was what chick’s were 1st ready for our broody hen Cheryl.. although I think I know someone that is breeding Chiquita’s...

water tip which you may already know...

remember the drip containers that drip into a puddle? i usually fill those around 10 or 11 when i first bring out the ice jugs. I notice that they all run to the puddles that i just filled and all have beaks open

this morning i filled the drip containers at 6 am with puddles and at 10 am when i went out with the ice jugs no one had their beak open

so anyhow i will fill up the puddles and drip containers early from now on even though that means i have to change the puddle locations more often bc they get stinky

@meetthebubus yep - our nights haven't been too cool lately so they head to the water pans early here too.
I didn't dip my girl in the gasoline last night - just couldn't do it. While washing her up and the scales coming off there was new fresh skin under there. There was no way I was going to put that girl through that. Bad enough she has all the oil and crapola on her! So much for the three day process. I'll just keep washing her up and sometime toward the end of 10 days I'll dip again. The gasoline is supposed to kill the nits. She has those things really, really bad. I feel like such a bad momma. I didn't see them until she had scabs. NOW I'm looking closely at the others who have darker legs. We haven't done the PSP on the coop and roosts, etc - I haven't been feeling well. We need to do it early, early, early and I'm barely making it up by 7a to feed - then going back to bed until 11 or so. I totally dislike the meds but they work so its hard to weigh.
So here's my question for ya'all. Do you think putting baby nail polish on a beak or comb - like a big dot - would hurt the chickens? My sweet hubby is having a hard time telling a few apart. Actually I can see a few useful things for the polish. We love to sit out in the morning when I get up early or late evening and watch the kids.
Last but not least - did I ever tell you I hate the mesquite beans? We have 4/5 mesquites around the chicken yard and they are falling off right now. Nobody eats them - they just gather up poop! Stay cool and safe dear friends. Off to do another water bottle swap.

Don't feel like a bad mama, you're doing what you can do alleviate the situation and it's clear that you care deeply about your chickens. I felt so bad (and still do!) about the bumblefoot situation, feelings of guilt that I hadn't been checking the bottom of their feet. It's just a part of chicken keeping. You are supreme mama hen and just want the best for your brood
We don't have mesquites near the coop, but have the palo verde beans ALL OVER right now, they are so messy! I seem to forget every year that they drop and go all over the garden. I should probably rake them up before we get another big rain, otherwise things will get quite mucky.
As for the nail polish, I would try a quick-dry type. Or maybe you could mark them with a permanent marker, or get those little colored bands that go on the feet. Our feed store sells them as "chicken charms", with little hearts and stars and cute stuff like that. Reminds me of a charm bracelet, but for chickens!

Well, I think that those Chiquita's are a good looking bird. I love that splashing that they get, and they lay blue eggs on top of it! I've been trying to get in contact with the lady in Scottsdale that advertised them in the CL, but she has yet to answer me back!

I know what you mean about mesquite beans. Serious pain in the you know what!

I think polish would be ok. Putting it on a feather might be better though? Idk.

Sorry about your meds. When I have ti take stuff for hives I'm worthless, but they work great.

Maybe you could try to sell those mesquite bean's? Some people grind them up to make flour.

I’ll ask her today, if she is the person I am thing of.. she told me years ago & I think it’s the same person.... how did you contact her?
