Arizona Chickens

Hello, everyone. Just found the Arizona thread. I live in Carefree,AZ and just picked up 4 D'uccle chicks and 2 D'uccle Cochin mix chicks. I also have 14 adult hens( rhode island red, california white, and americans) who are still going strong with their laying. Getting about a dozen eggs a day!!! I am excited to be apart of this chicken community. Hope everyone is surviving the heat and praying for rain.

@igorsMistress @FeatherPugs @SonoranChick Yes, those big fluffy ones are nice for us human's to look at, but they seem to suffer our heat the most. I only have a couple of the older Australorps left and during the day they move slower than the other and stay down at the end of the run closest to the misters and the puddles left by them, unless she's laying an egg. The CCLB's go back and forth and even run or semi-fly around in the run. The Breese just more or less stay a bit inactive with their wings held out to cool themselves. The NN's can be seen standing in the pans of drinking water. The NN's can be bred into any other breed if you want the different colored eggs or feathers, and they have way less feathering that will be keeping them hot when it's hot.

@meetthebubus My shadecloth looks like it's still attached well. It came loose a couple times last year when we had high wind's, so after the last time that it did we used wire to attach it back on instead of the plastic tie things. I do have an extra backup one here already for if that one wears out. (I bought 2 of them.)

Welcome! The AZ thread is the best and nicest place on here, no one ever fights and they are helpful and supportive

@BlueBaby
I loved those girls a ton but when I saw all tgat fluff I was worried.

I'm debating between Penedesencas and NNs. Maybe some of each I dunno. I have time.

Well, I'll be doing another hatch pretty soon, but with the NN's, and the females of my other breeds that are in with my White NN roo. All of my girls are laying now except for the one's that aren't old enough yet. I will be sticking with the lighter colors of them though, as I think that it will help to reflect more of the sun when they are in it when it's hot.

I just looked up those Pendesenca's, and it seem's that they only lay like 156 or so medium sized eggs a year? Not a good enough layer for my taste.

Look's like I'm going to get more rain! It's already sprinkling, and the sky is petty dark up there! The free-ranging hen from across the road just took off heading for home. I think she's in love with my yard blue Australorp cockerel, as she come's over here everyday to spend some time with him. :lau

Of the girls that are laying eggs: 1 Splash Australorp, 3 CCLB's, and 3 White NN's (one does have a few black scattered feathers). I still have 8 more girls that haven't started laying yet. My White NN roo has his job cut out for him as 7 are laying.

I got sprinkles here so far. Lot's of dust and wind, and thundering. My dog is barking at the thunder. :gig
