@FeatherPugs Thanks Their sand is constantly in either partial or full shade, so it may get warm, but never hot. I am considering switching over to some sort of deep bedding method in the fall though, simply because I will not have time to go clean poop daily with a newborn. I think with deep bedding I could get away with changing it all out every month or so. If I don't clean poop daily now, it looks like a dirty cat litter box by sunset. And as you said, straw and hay is warmer, so that might be nice for them in the colder months.
Which brings me to an odd question for you guys...how often do you scoop poop? What method do you use?

I use good ol' dirt! Rake and then shovel it out with wheelbarrow. The good thing is every once in awhile I bring in fresh dirt and not only do they love the fresh clean dirt for baths, but it brings in fresh natural grit

I personally think the deep litter method is not a healthy method imo

@SonoranChick - I am not a fan of deep litter - I think it breeds uglies we don't even know about. My poop boards keep the poop off the floor in general - so about once a month I generally rake and whatever to clean the floor. Usually clean the poop boards at the same time. I don't find the dirt floors a hassle at all. We do what we do.

We lost our Colbie dog today to cancer. She was a Vizula/Doberman mix. She was 10 almost 11 years old. Was she loved, yes and she knew it too and probably took advantage of it!! We’ve known about the cancer probability for over a year, it just finally raised its ugly head and said now. She is peaceful at the Rainbow Bridge, talking smack with Sister, Sugar Pug and learning to know little Bug Pug. She was such a love around the chickens and baby chicks too. Couldn't have cared less! It will be odd for a while around here. Hard to imagine my bed without her in it or her barking when the doorbell rings. Hug your fur babies.

It is so hard to say goodbye. She must have been very special if she was a friend of the chickens! I have a sweet fur baby that we lost 2 years ago to cancer that will be there to welcome her at the rainbow bridge and make sure she feels at home. Take comfort knowing that she isn't suffering anymore, and that you gave her a happy life, full of love. I'll be thinking of your family (fur and feathers included) today.

The 3rd chicks hatching out right now. The one from the CCLB blue egg is fully feathered on the neck and is white in color. The one that hatched from my tan egg and died was NN'd and white in color with just a small bowtie. This 3rd egg is a tan one, and it's a NN, and look's to be blueish in color. I hope it hurries up and dried and gains strength, so I can put it in the brooder with the other one that is lonely.

Sorry that you lost your dog. It's hard to loose one like that, and it seem's so many pets are getting cancer these day's. I lost a female dog to cancer about 6 years ago.
