I have the same girl in the broody breaker right now. She has been broody twice already, raised two chicks and is broody again! She is a good mommy and protects her chicks but is able to be with her sisters at the same time. I enjoy watching her raise chicks but right now we are not doing chicks. Next year around this time. We've had a crazy year so far. We've had scaly leg mites, lice, red mites, lost my big fur girl and have added a smaller rescue fur girl who was sick, sick, sick but now better and I've learned she chases chickens and cats. We are working on it and she is learning but I must keep my eye on her all the time! Plus I'm sure there was stuff I've probably forgotten and just took care of. Adding to my flock doubled my work - worth it but still doubled! Best part is I'm still happy! Now that the weather is cooler I spend time in the yard reading or just sitting. Loving it.
The chicken coop now contains chickens!! I think they approve. And I really like having a space where I can sit with them. I think they like that, too, because they were all piling up on my legs. The whole front is open wire, which we'll cover once winter comes. View attachment 1555764 View attachment 1555766 View attachment 1555770 View attachment 1555771 View attachment 1555773
@Geranium Nice, nice, nice. You can just put a two x4 from the smaller blocks short to the ground for them to begin roosting on. You'll be amazed how fast they will take to it once they try it out! Then you can raise it as needed until whenever! As long as you don't get big rain or wind in the open area you really won't need much extra to close it up for "winter" - they won't need it too much I've found - I guess that depends on how its set for the sun thing. I personally just watch for wind and rain. I just use a removable tarp for my one open roost area. Works just fine. I really, really like it!
