Arizona Chickens

What is everyone giving their feather babies for Turkey day?

I'm doing fresh pomegranate seeds tomorrow for them

It will be the first time for the Eggers (pomegranate)

First time I gave them pomegranate seeds was Thanksgiving 2 years ago to calm them down after the bobcat chased mohawkie but was unsuccessful

I have loved and cuddled my Roos from the beginning. Silkies are hard to sex so didn’t know they were boys till they crowed. Gus went through a stage he would stalk me and run me down. I just never showed fear. He would also chase my son. This phase lasted about a month. Since then he has been fine with us. He still dont like little humans to much. I make sure he is in his pen when my granddaughter is over. The boys and Emma know their names and they have a name for me. They alert when my son comes around but he is very impatient with them when they crow and I think they feel threatened by him.

Roosters get a bad rap sometimes but I have had and been shown nothing but love to them and from them.

My nn roo Charley is a good boy too! I treat him just like one of the hens at feed or treat time. The hen's gather for the treats and I drop them by my feet because that's where the hen's are. Then I toss a treat at Charley's feet to let him know that one is just for him. They love when I bring in the red bucket, because they know it will either have some weed's or alfalfa hay in it. They will run along the fencing of the pen, and meet me at the entry door for it.

I'm keeping an eye on an injured pullet chick right now. I turned them loose in the big pen yesterday and 3 of them got trapped in a space that I didn't think they could fit into. 2 of them died, but the other pullet seem's to have injured a leg or it might just be cramped. I put the injured one back into the chick cage to observe how she does. I hope that I won't have to cull her. She seem's to be eating and drinking ok, but want's to lay down mostly. I fixed it so that the chicks can't pile themselves back into the spot again.

I'm keeping an eye on her, but I'm not going to baby her. I'll see if she is any better the day after Thanksgiving. If she look's like she will be a cripple or something by then, I will cull her. Better to cull than let her get picked on for life by the rest of the flock.

You might also consider giving her to someone that doesn't mind, I know you feel differently which is cool, you breed them, I get it. But...
Picasso had a broken leg, and other issues now she waddles around, (yep more a waddle bc of the leg injury which is healed but not perfect), she eats and grows up and is not the lowest in the pecking order she dominates a few that are twice her size.
She's full of life and loves to sit with me, sweet.

So hopefully your pullet will be ok but if not maybe someone can experience the joy she can bring them in an environment that works for her....

Just thinkin "outloud" :)

I checked on her right before the sun went down. I seen her stand up to drink water from the bowl, and she ate some feed. She was in a hurry to grab at some of the Italian bread crumbs that I had broke up and put in there. So, maybe she will be ok. I'll go look at her tomorrow again.

I'm glad! :fl
