Arizona Chickens

I'm curious, why the naked necks? they look like their having a serious molt or they have mites..lol.. I'm sure for hot areas it helps them keep cool.

Exactly :). I lost 2 of my Australorps last summer when it was hot as hades, 117*. The 2 naked necks I had seemed to suffer the least. I'm going for an all nn flock here.

That is what I was figuring, more heat tolerant.. we get miserably hot here, I'm near bullhead, generally 8 to 10 degree's cooler, I've seen it up to 120 here. Need to replace my mister for this summer.. I have one area with screen cloth so that it offers them shade, I will need to increase the shaded area since I am increasing the size of their run.

Oh yea, you know heat too!

I put a fan and mister in the coop last summer, kept the temp at nestbox level about 15 to 20 degrees cooler than outside. Planning to do that again this year but not sure what I can do about roost level temp. I have space issues.

Naked Necks have a number of plusses going for them. Heat tolerance one of the biggest. They are also more disease resistant, and have less feathers on other parts of their body too, you just can't see it because the feathers they do have fluff out well to cover the bare spots. But because of that they make a great dual purpose meat chicken because they're easier to pluck. And they have character... :D:cool::love

I am also finding our NN are tolerant of the colder weather we are having. We had freezing yesterday and they were still right in there for their food! I have others as well and I find the NN most tolerant of "stuff". One of the few things I have found is they get bored easy so I'm always changing up something in their big yard. Because my NNs were eye candy I have many different "breeds". Many different colors and patterns. I love it!

Yes, it's nice to be able to have chicken's that are heat tolerant and disease resistant, along with the many possibilities of the eye candy coloring's, and the different egg coloring's that you can get. Mine handled the cold temp the other night also. Before I went to bed the other night, the thermometer outside said that it was 32 F. I had no frozen chicken's out there when I woke up.
