Arizona Chickens

This happened once before like, I dunno 15 years ago maybe... When they say that every bird must be euthanized in those areas they mean it. That includes every parrot or finch that might be inside the house too. I remember reading horrow stories of the authorities coming and euthanizing people beloved macaws and cockatoos right out front of their house before leaving the premises. There was alot of backlash, so I imagine they'll be a bit more respectful about it this time.

I know of one long-time chicken breeder who's entire heritage flock was culled because of disease in the general area impacting the commercial poultry farms. Her family had worked on those birds for over 30 years and just like that they were all killed. Lab analysis showed ZERO signs of contagion. She lost her heritage line for nothing. The ONLY reason these culls are performed is to protect the commercial industry. They don't care one iota about people like us, and certainly not about our feathered pets.

Now Matilda is sick. Not the same as Norman Lethargic not eating much. I thought she was broody but not wanting to sit on any eggs I gave her. I’ve loader her up with vitamins and going to get some Tylan 50 tonight and give her a dose. I also gave her some worm meds. I mixed up some rooster booster and gave her some of that too.

What else can I do?

If nothing else works, look into performing an Epsom salt flush. One of my eldest birds consumed multiple Green Horn Worms that had fed on Sacred Datura last summer. I thought she'd die, but I performed an Epsom salt flush on her and she was back to normal within 48 hours.

I heard 2 rumors before about how it got started over there in California. One rumor was it started at one of those poultry show's. The other rumor was that it was brought into California through the Mexican border and started with those fighting cock's. I haven't heard anything more on which one is true. I do periodically check here though for updates.

We have had problems here at poultry shows from birds brought up from Mexico. All it takes is one occurrence to plant the idea in people's minds permanently.

So, a combination of both of those rumors that I heard are true, then?

Down here in Pima County, yes. I know some of the people associated with setting up the poultry show down here and got it straight from them. They've apparently had 'unofficial' discussions for years about prohibiting entrants from Mexico because of problems they routinely encounter both with the health of the birds and with the general attitude of cock fighting being legal down there. That said, I also met a pretty impressive and dedicated breeder of Aseels from Mexico who had amazingly healthy and beautiful birds, as well as an really dedicated breeder of Muscovy from Mexico. Just like with people around here, you have people who work hard to raise healthy birds, and some who just see them as a means to an end and don't put that much into caring for them.

I'm pretty sure its all speculation... These kinds of things are hard to trace when it starts out with "under the table" type activity. But being as these out breaks keep happening down here in the southwest, it increases the chances of it having something to do with Mexican birds. If it were in the southeast it would be either the warm and humid climate combined with migratory birds, or maybe birds brought up from Cuba. Up north most avian problems seem to be fungal, like asper, just because fungal spores are so prevalent up there. The falconry community keeps a close eye on these things because of all the work they put into their birds they are kinda anal about this stuff.

This sounds horrible to say, but this is another reason I'm not interested in ever getting NPIP certified. It's just another way for the authorities to have a registered list of poultry keepers to pick on when they feel like it.

You are most likely right about that, as they seem to do that same thing with everything else.
