Arizona Chickens

Yes @starri33 I was just going to suggest people look at the report from the US Dept of Agriculture. The post from the Chicken Chick is most comprehensive and there is a FB post from the CC that has comments. There have been 3 COMMERCIAL facilities hit plus the Backyard folks. This was said: "Due to progression and duration of a virulent Newcastle Disease (VND) outbreak in parts of Southern California, the State Veterinarian has ordered mandatory euthanasia of birds in neighborhoods in Compton (Los Angeles County) Muscoy (San Bernardino County) Mira Loma/Jurupa Valley (Riverside County) Perris (Riverside County) Unfortunately, even if birds and flocks have previously tested negative but now fall within a designated mandatory euthanasia area, the birds must be euthanized. USDA/CDFA staff will contact affected bird owners."
For us it is all about biosecurity. - for me, my yard is now off limits to anyone but myself and my DH and not much from my DH. No new birds for me on purpose - even those that get quarantined. UGLYD!!

I'm glad I'm not the only one with girls still molting. Thought I was done and late last week went out to a feather party! Seems one of my girls decided she would hard, hard molt. Poor girl. It is the black Aussie (Pearl Jam) I got from you @BlueBaby. Her NN sister is still piddling at her molt and her other sisters are done and didn't molt hard. Poor Pearl is almost naked. I'll try to remember a pic today.

Some of my girls are molting very strangely this year. I had an Australorp that went through hard molt for about a month and then resumed laying actively just to stop again and molt out all of her neck feathers again. One of my NNs did the same thing. I'm staring at them like, "Girls! Enough with the fashion changes! Your new neck feathers look exactly like the last ones!"

Has anyone else read this? I've not noticed any of the issues in my flock, but I'm just over the border to Needles CA. about a hours drive.

This happened once before like, I dunno 15 years ago maybe... When they say that every bird must be euthanized in those areas they mean it. That includes every parrot or finch that might be inside the house too. I remember reading horror stories of the authorities coming and euthanizing peoples beloved macaws and cockatoos right out front of their house before leaving the premises. There was alot of backlash, so I imagine they'll be a bit more respectful about it this time.

That is horrid! They would take house pets???? The inspector would not leave my home in one piece!

I heard 2 rumors before about how it got started over there in California. One rumor was it started at one of those poultry show's. The other rumor was that it was brought into California through the Mexican border and started with those fighting cock's. I haven't heard anything more on which one is true. I do periodically check here though for updates.

Now Matilda is sick. Not the same as Norman Lethargic not eating much. I thought she was broody but not wanting to sit on any eggs I gave her. I’ve loader her up with vitamins and going to get some Tylan 50 tonight and give her a dose. I also gave her some worm meds. I mixed up some rooster booster and gave her some of that too.

What else can I do?
