Arizona Chickens

Don't worry, my 2 girl's that I have that are laying those blue egg's aren't going anywhere. Now, if someone get's those NN chick's that I hatched last month, they might get lucky with a blue egg layer out of them.

Excellent! I'll go for an even dozen this fall then. Hubs wants some colored eggs for selling and I agree they'll be nice to have.

Cool beans, that's going to be a fun hatch. I like the possibility of naked necks with top notches, that would kinda cool.

You should come over here and see what my NN top notcher look's like. She has the bib and is mostly white with a patern of black feather's on her back. She lay's a green egg. Her mother was a CCLB hen that I sold.

We went to look at the Saguaro cactus with their "Mother's Day hats". We love to see them in bloom. Doesn't take much to get close to the Gila River Reservation where there are quite a few of them. Then came home and watched a my kind of movie - A Dog's Way Home - my DH loved it and I totally enjoyed the whole diversity/kindness thing. Yep, was a good day - be no cooking either!!

I just went and evaluated my yard, how big does the night-time/coop area have to be? The advantage of a bigger area is obvious, plus, they can have constant grit and water, since one of the water spigots is in the area I'm looking at containing. 6ft high fencing on the long sides, 3ft on the ends for now until I can afford to get something other than the wire I already bought.

Hubby didn't buy 5, just 2, and turns out he and the son-in-law were at the feed store on Stockton Hill Rd., so not TSC. Also, the chicks they brought home are apparently not the ones he originally mentioned, they're going to have to stay a few weeks in a brooder, they're hatchlings, probably about a week old. So now I have a total of 6. I think that's going to be easier to gradually adjust to more chickens (for us, not necessarily them, obviously) and give me more time to get into a larger home eventually, not dealing with too many chickens and a landlord.

Still, wondering how many will fit in my little pallet based coop and although we just got a 25lb bag of crumble, I wanted to introduce the older ones to stuff like the sunflower seeds and corn and stuff.

I'm in Kingman, AZ, by the way :)
The standard size people say the coop is suppose to be is 4 sq ft per bird and then 10 sq ft in the run. if you let them free range the run isn't a issue, you don't really want to over crowd as they can start pecking each other, Our monsoons will keep them inside. You can ask around and see if you have neighbors that have a scrap wood pile you could get into for enlarging it.

There's alway's Craigslist too, as I often see people trying to get rid of scrap wood or even pallet's that could be broken down and used for enlarging a coop. Just check the free section.
