Arizona Chickens

Ok, I'm back asking for help again...
one of my "older hens" about 5yrs, up till last week was laying about 3 eggs a week. Yesterday she was top girl during treat time, but....
This am, she would not get down off the roost, when we picked her up, she had a dirty vent, and did not want to be active. We cleaned her up and gave her a epsom salt bath. During the bath we noticed her breast area is swollen, and feels like she is retaining liquid. (Not in the abdomen like ascites)
Any suggestions?

I have no idea as I haven't had it happen to any of mine, but I would suggest that you ask over here to get some help with that:

Ohhh... That doesn't sound good. Could the chest be fluid retention in the crop? Maybe look up crop stasis or something... I would crate her up for awhile and give easy to digest food and electrolytes until you can figure this out.... Poor baby.

Good morning Arizona :frow

@nicollee how's your hen? Did you find some help?

Today is the first day the chicks are free ranging. I've been letting them out each afternoon and gradually reducing my supervision. They're exploring the big house and foraging away in the side yard. So far I haven't seen anyone venture out back with the bigs yet. They are so darn cute!

I've got ice ready to cool down water this afternoon and I'll be filling the waders today with cool water after work. Some of the littles looked a bit warm yesterday but were fine by bedtime.

Speaking of bedtime, we seem to have a routine. The bigs go in to roost but the littles will huddle in front of their pop door. I open the big door, close the pop door and we go once around the coop, then they all funnel in. If I don't close the pop door and open the big door to block their path, we play ring around the rosie

What's everyone up to?

@SonoranChick how's you move coming? Everything unpacked and put away?

@BlueBaby how's the chicks? Is Buster feeling any better these days?

@starri33 how is Sir Poops A Lot doing?

@igorsMistress It's funny how chick's can be sometimes. The chick's over here are doing well. They are very active. I placed another bowl of water in there for them now, since they are growing. I wanted to make sure that they have plenty of water now that the temp's are rising. I'm pretty sure that 3 of the 4 pullet's are now laying eggs.

Buster has his up's and down day's on his leg. Now that it's heating up outside he's been slowing down on wanting to chase the cars passing by from the inside of his fenced yard. I don't let him stay out there for long now because it's too hot. When I let him back in, he goes right to the air-conditioner's vent and pretty much stay's glued to it. :gig

In case you were wondering, the boat race this year will be in November, the weekend before Thanksgiving. We just got word of it yesterday. They won't be starting to sell the RV spaces until the middle of next month.

Thank you for asking, Sir Poops a Lot is doing great, he's been in with the rest of the flock for over a week now, he's starting to settle down and get in there with the rest of them for their scratch, not running so much if someone looks at him..lol. My little ones that have been in the grow out coop are wanting to get out so bad, maybe next week before we go, I want them to get close to the smallest hens size..

Wow how many eggs a day are you getting now?

I can't blame Buster, I can feel the temperature change in my office each afternoon. I should really close the blinds in here.

That's great news! I'm so happy your flock is accepting him as a member. I bet that'll make leaving a bit less stressful.
