Arizona Chickens

Sad news today. My red star, “Stunts”, passed away. She was ill a few months back and then got better, but this morning I could tell something was really not right with her. She could barely stand up. Her crop felt fine so I’m not sure what happened but when we got back from the store she has passed. She was very sweet, one of my favorite girls. She will be deeply missed.

Here she is as a young chickie:

We love you Stunts! Thanks for all the happy days, sweet hen.

There's a chorus of crowing every morning View attachment 1864280 4 boys will be processed shortly and a couple of the girls are a good size. A couple are quite petite still, hanging on to those until next Spring as they should keep us in eggs this winter. Keeping the little black roo that's slow feathering and the big blue boy for now. They are the most easy going of all the boys.

Your going to eat the girl's too? I bought a new cockerel for my flock over here to finally get some new blood. He's starting to want to get interested in the hen's now. He's not a white one though, and he doesn't have a big bib like Charley had. Charley has a new harem over there with @starri33 now.

@SonoranChick Sorry that you lost Stunt's. :hugs Do you think that it could have been from the heat? How old was she?
Thank you @BlueBaby I definitely think it could have been the heat, she always had a really hard time in the summer. I also read that her specific breed tends to have a shorter lifespan because they are bred for high egg production and burn out quickly. She was just over 2 years old, so still fairly young.

Congratulations on the new boy.

What else should I do with them? I don't know what took down my older flock. It would be irresponsible for me to sell them off without having that information. I really don't have a choice. But that's why I'm breeding...meat and eggs so...

I understand. I wish that you were able to find out if the problem had been cleared up or not.

These birds could show up with symptoms pretty much any time, they're still in the prime age range for that to happen if it was Marek's. If it happens again I have everything ready to send for a necropsy immediately.
I'm hoping sanitizing the coop worked on whatever it was.

If these birds make it to year, and the new chicks I get in September do too, and I don't find any tumors inside at butcher, I'll feel better about selling smaller girls off.

Good luck with that!
