Arizona Chickens

At this point anything is possible I guess. I saw on the news that a basketball player tested positive and had no symptoms so I'm not surprised it's spreading.

I know, and then you have other people that are out there with no regard for other's. A man that had tested positive for Corona Virus got on a plane, so now everyone that was on that plane was exposed to it.

Any AZ chicken people out there? I am looking for some advice on raising chicks in the desert. I'm in Mesa. Does it get too hot out here? I have four 20 day old chicks, 3 Buff Orps and 1 leghorn. Do we need to do anything special here
I am in Marana Az outside of Tucson nirth and west of 1-10. I have had chickens here for 6 years. I started with eight and lost 2 in first 2 years from weather and replaced them with Silver Laced Wyandotts. They both expired in their first year here. Then i got Buff Oppingtons to replace them and they are in their beginning 2nd year and doing well. They need lots if shade and coverings inside walking around areas. We got small mister set 3 years ago and they love that. Have to be careful if water buckets even plastic can get real warm to hot water. Shade for water buckets with a covering is good and i also ice the bucket every day June to early Sept. i give them cantalope (and they don't eat the rinds) and watermelon which are both goid for hydration. I don’t give them scratch in summer due to heat as scratch is goid in winter here to maintain body heat. A chicken is too hot when it is panting through the beak with mouth 👄 open wide for more than a few minutes in summer. All roists shoul be up high at least 3 feet and pen at night should have vents that open for extra ventilation at night. I have copper marans hen (born in Marana) a Wheaton Marans rooster ( nearly 3 ft tall and girgeous colors). An Ameracauna, i have a naked neck hen (also born in Marana) and the 2 Buff Oppingtons. Hope this is helpful.

@suezeaa32 It's good to see you here popping in on our states thread! Welcome! I have mostly the naked neck's, because they handle our summer heat better and they lay egg's well too. I do have a little Black Copper Maran in my brooder that I hatched from my last batch of shipped egg's that I got. I also hatch egg's from my own flock too. I'm a hatch-a-holic.

Good morning AZ. Crazy weather here last night, we had horizontal rain, thunder and lightning blow through last night just as darkness fell. I was outside to close the pop door and checked on the wee ones...a little rain was able to blow through the vents but they were warm and toasty under the heat plate. We've had a few issues getting supplies, mostly milk, so my daughter has been buying at a store in an affluent neighborhood on her way home. We're not running out, just staying ahead. I hope I can buy some flour and yeast this weekend and might pick up more feed/dog food if I can. How's everyone doing?

Maricopa had some hail in town. I didn't notice any out here though, but we did have a bit of gust's of wind with the rain.

My DH stopped by Walmart last night to see if they had some of that 5 minute rice for me again. Fry's was cleaned out of it the other night. Walmart was cleaned out on that, but they had pallet's of chicken feed (both pellets and crumbles) in the isle. I had him pick me up another bag of the crumbles because my chicken's are different age group's. My chicken's won't be starving for awhile. I still had some on hand here. Buster has his dog food too, but I'll have Gary look for another bag for him when he goes in town to pay another bill. My DH is over 65, so if he got his butt out of bed early enough on Wednesday's he could get in some of these stores that open early for seniors only, before everyone else cleans the shelves after re-stocking.

That's true lol. I buy my feed at TSC and they've sent emails saying they're going to remain open and they're stocking up. I need to go get a couple bags of feed tomorrow morning.

Hi everyone! It’s been a while since I’ve last logged in but I was wondering if anyone else is seeing all the rain that’s been happening these past few days, at around four or five in the afternoon we even had hail which I haven’t seen in years  and with all of the coronavirus panic this is all starting to seem so unreal:p we’ve made sure to stay stocked with water and hopefully with the chickens we’re sure to have eggs for days:lau any special precautions you guys are taking? Xx
We're just sticking to the house as much as possible, I'm one of those weird people who try and have a year+ of stuff on hand. We're down to 18 rolls of TP, but I probably have 20 of paper towels, we'd not have had a issue if people would have done like the CDC has encouraged us to do, keep a 3 months supply on hand.

Good Morning everyone, how are you doing? does anyone else sell their eggs? I'm asking 2.00 a dozen for mine..and selling out pretty fast, people in my area are asking 3.00 and 4.00 for theirs, I won't do it. I had been just giving them away till my flock got big enough I needed help with my feed. So far so good for access to feed for my monsters, The girls are putting out 2 dzn + a day and they are flying out of my fridge as fast as I can get them. I've got a broody :) she went broody on the 18th. So expecting hatch around the 8th of April.. She's my Ayam Cermani mix. I don't know if I still have one of her eggs under her, but I have NN, Leghorn and Easter/Olive Egger's. Have hatched for my friend, I've got one little NN out of the bunch @BlueBaby , it's one of the blue eggs. They'll be going to their new home probably on Monday, I offered to raise them till we could figure out who's who, but I suspect she's going to fall in love and take them home then.
