Arizona Chickens

Paint me stupid but... how does that work here? Does the Arizona heat help or hinder the chickens if you let them go broody? I know folks say to keep the incubator humid but where I’m at it doesn’t get very humid ~20-30% humidity normally except monsoon season... should I get a humidifier for the coop if I choose to let a hen keep the eggs?

Some people like broody hen's to help them hatch the egg's. Other people prefer to hatch the egg's in an incubator. In an incubator, the humidity is gauged by how much water that you add in there to get it right. If the hen is the one that is hatching your egg's, you don't have to worry about the temp or humidity of the egg's. The hen takes care of that.

On another note, before I started doing the Naked Neck's I was doing those big fluffy Australorp's. She picked the hotter time of our summer to go broody, and ended up dieing in the nesting box. When it is that hot, it is not good for a hen to go broody, especially if she happen's to be a big fluffy heavy breed. Last year I had a Naked Neck go broody on me 2 time's last summer. She stayed in the nesting box panting away because it was 116 F. outside. The Naked Neck's do have less feathering on the bodies along with the lesser amount of neck feather's.

When we first started getting interested in chickens I tried looking for a few naked necks... the only ones I could find for sale though were up in Tucson which is an hour and a half from me (too far to travel for a $20-30 purchase for me)... but everything I’ve read they do good in this climate...

I'm over here rural of the city of Maricopa, near the Harrah's Ak-Chin Casino, and I sell my started pullet's for $10.00 each, and my extra cockerel's are for free.

So after a quick stop at C-A-L Ranch today (had to fight myself not to buy more chicks)... I think it’s safe to assume these are just EEs... just looking for feedback as I know they are still too young to get a 100% accurate reading on breed or gender... they do have puffier cheek fluff than my other chicks do... and their legs are an almost ashy blue grey if that helps 🤷‍♂️

it’s the 2 with the chipmunk patterns in the middle in this pic:

This is what they have them listed as:

The $4.99 price tag is what’s really pushing me towards thinking they are just EEs and not actual Ameraucana or Araucana (specially since they didn’t spell Araucana correctly)... no matter what they are they are the cutest and also the only 2 I’ve named...
