Arizona Chickens

I have one Wyandott (called Monroe) she is a big girl compared to the rest, I thought she might have been a rooster she was so hefty and beautiful - I moved her and rest of flock up north when the heatwave started in Mesa. It's still gotten to 100 and a little above that even here up north. Monroe and rest of flock are doing great. They only started laying about the first week of August but not all laying yet. I get 6-9 eggs a day from about 17 hens (these were all hatched March 31 or so from a hatchery).

I pick up 2 little ones from the feed store yesterday.. but then I realized I heard someone says wyandotte is really hard to raise in Arizona heat I was worried because I did lose a rir this summer heat when it reach 116 degrees out here . I did put out mister ,wet the ground , and have a kiddie pool out but I still lose one to the heat and I was worried for the upcoming year for these 2 wyandotte .

I lost an older fully feathered hen to the heat this summer, but I didn't loose any of my Naked Neck's.

Sorry for your loss :( I was so sad when mine died it always the favorite one too .

This summer was really brutal with the heat. I heard that we had at least 30 day's of record breaking temp's, plus we have all of that California smoke coming over here from all of those fires going on over there. People wonder why we drag our yard over here and don't put in a bunch of trees and grass. It can't catch fire and burn if it isn't there.

Sorry to hear about the loss of some birds. :(

I love the story about the new hens cuddling up to the metal rooster, that sounds cute!

Learning something new every day. I looked up what lash eggs are, and no, the ones I ate were just big eggs with two yolks.

I just recandled the eggs that were given to me to see if any more of them were showing signs of development. A big brown egg and a medium brown one joined the others in the incubator. I've been storing them on a shelf and not in the refrigerator.

This afternoon I got some baby chick food and some water additive that's supposed to add electrolytes and be beneficial for newly hatched chickens.

I'm getting set to sell my place and move back up to Cordes/Mayer from black canyon city. I know black canyon is much cooler than phx in the evening but not enough for me!

Well, you will still be in AZ. and have your flock, so keep popping in after your move.

I lost a few birds this summer. Be careful with misters, too much moisture in the air can cause respiratory issues. Ice blocks without water in that kiddie pool will help them cool off. Just put it in a dry pool and they will sip it as it melts and stand in it where it pools. I put mine out around noon so they have a puddle to enjoy by the hottest part of the day. Good luck! BTW my son has a Wyandotte and it did just fine this summer.
