Arizona Chickens

I found out last night when I cracked the egg open that Misty layed yesterday to mix my dog's med up in it, that Louie has managed to hit the mark on her. So I have fertile egg's again. I also seen him breed the squealer the other day too. I call her the squealer because that's what she does if any of the other's come near her in the coop while she's trying to lay an egg.

My Chicken Project Of Week CPOW!
To build a chicken pen in a new raised bed in the greenhouse for the 4 Polish and a 10 year old hen. This should simplify my chicken chores and make these 5 much happier. It's also expanding my planting area in a couple months by putting these 5 to work now. I'll update post with finished project pics soon.

10 year old hen.
Post a pix of your 10 year young one. I also keep my chickens into eternity, and my oldest was 13. Next oldest went 11, and was a victim of predator. :hit
Current live one is almost 9 years. A RIR. She retired from egg laying, but still provides joy :love

On the subject of a pen inside greenhouse. If your greenhouse is secure, you could get away by building a wire netting structure with some roost bars inside.
A roll of this, and handful of zipties, Easy-peazy
Another advantage, LIGHT, and can be transferred to a different raised bed with little effort. Put those girls to garden work. :thumbsup

Ok got a question for you chicken parents!! We went camping for one night my girls and boys are in a pretty safe coop. Came home to feathers everywhere. Looked as though a chicken blew up!!! No one was missing and no seemed to be injured. But this hen is very very sad looking now. I am assuming she is molting but dang she looks very rough. Her sisters(same age) don’t look like her. She is a cuckoo maran approximately 1.5 yrs old. Two of the pics are her sisters for comparison and she is the ONLY hen molting if that is indeed what is going on. Coop has roof and totally fenced off.

Mmm. While other people are sharing stories of their hens laying eggs, I look into the nest box, and who is in there keeping an eye on the ceramic chicken eggs? My rooster! *sigh*

The hens now have names, too. The one with the most lacy looking white trim in Lacey. Another one walks up to me on the roost when I clean up inside, and puts her face next to mine and very quietly tells me puck-puck-puck-puck-puck over and over. Not sure what chicken secrets she is sharing, but I think Whisper is a good name for her. The third one is Henrietta because she's a hen. Still no eggs from the girls.

Does hemp chicken bedding give them the munchies? :D

My hens are each molting, one at a time. they all hatched on the same day and have lived together since then. They went through an "auracauna" stage, before that some lost a few tail feathers, some lost some down underneath. I think it's individual. They do seem to know they're vulnerable, hanging around the roost, nest box (not using it of course), where they feel safer.

Even though I have different ages in my flock, they all molt at different time's. Even those that will hatch at the same time can molt at different time's. Also even chicken's of the same breed that hatched at the same time can molt a little off schedule with each other, like as you see that some seem to mature a bit faster than other's.

She just looks so rough!! And she’s gonna be cold come this weekend!

the dominiques are supposed to have a rose comb but I admit I'd never heard of barred hollands until very recently. and I thought the dominiques were supposed to have a more cuckoo pattern than barring.
Good to know, we have a few & being new BR owners, a couple have different coloring. I will post photos later next week.
