Arizona Chickens

I just want to thank all of you. I got at least 4 or 5 PMs of folks offering maran chicks or juvies.
That is so kind of all of you.

I think I have enough in the bators to replenish my flock. At least I hope so.

The AZ chicken folks are the nicest folks on the planet.

I candled today (day 4) because Mary (The Warden) said it was best to get the unfertile Icelandics out of the incubator early. I started out with a total of 82 eggs in the bators. I now have 68. 11 of those I removed were Icelandics so I still have 32 dark layers in there. That should give me at least 20 to hatch and hopefully 8-10 pullets and then a pic of roos. Plus I still have some eggs in Laree's bators so I'l be fine. Just wish the chickens I have would lay! so far this week I've gotten 17 eggs but I should have gotten twice that many with as many hens/pullets as I have Maybe they won't start up good until Feb when it starts to warm up.

At present my birds are all doing well, no sniffles, no sneezes etc.... I did pull another dead rat out of the coop yesterday but I'm watching real close.

Thanks again for all of your kindness.

Mahonri- I won't candle until day 10 or so, so you can just not worry about those right now. I can't see anything in the dark eggs, anyway. Let's just assume they are all going to hatch!

So...a few days ago someone bashed my Aloha project. It got deleted, but I am still a little butt-hurt. It's juvenile, I know: but it feels like someone said my lasanga dinner was crap because I grew the wheat, harvested it, made flour, raised the chickens, gathered the eggs, made noodles, and then made the lasanga recipe the way I like it.

Extra mozzerella.

What really cheesed me off is the reference was uncalled for. The topic was about something else, and they said, "I hate it when people go all cheap like...."

I am not trying to stir the pot in anyway---I'd rather the matter just drop, but I wasn't able to express my frustration. Some select people have no appreciation for the hard work involved in creating or even improving a breed.

Poop on them.

Plenty of other people work HARD to improve/create breeds. They are my heroes.

[juvenile rant over]
Thanks for listening.

Mahonri, hope you are feeling better. I know the feeling, and it sucks. Do you get the headache when you bend over too? I don't know how you can do a delicate job when you feel like crap.

Laree, sorry about your thread. Guess I'm glad I read it before it got deleted.

I have a red Cochin bantam rooster that I need a home for. I have no issues with chickens being eaten, but not this one. His name is Goner. I swear this chicken came back from being near death, so close i thought he was dead and took him out (flat as a pancake) I syringe fed this chick for days. He lived by himself in a small box on my counter for weeks. I'm needing a place for him. I need to reduce a few more chickens to keep the coops with appropriate numbers so they are not over crowded and while im not disturbed with other roosters being eaten, I cant let him be dinner. If someone is interested in him, please PM me.

Yeah, and to each their own. I've personally enjoyed looking at the pictures of your Aloha's. I think they are pretty. While I think everyone is entitled to their opinion, I think that's mean to make rude remarks. I see lots of breeds/mixes I personally don't like but keep it to my self. Being a cheerio wizzer is uncool. I hope despite whatever remarks were made that you will keep moving forward on your project.

Mahoni - I have been lucky enough to not have to deal with the rats yet, but did live in Phoenix area several years ago and those rats can be horrid. Good luck getting rid of them other ways.

Laree - I'm sorry to hear about that. I dont understand why people feel the need to criticize something when it has nothing to do with them.

So I was so mad at my cat (young cat) this morning. He was only doing his job and he is a great mouser, but he is one of those types that plays with them until they are dead, rather than just getting it over with. He got a baby mouse this morning and it was like he was torturing the poor thing. I had to go do something somewhere else for a while, as I can hardly discipline him for it, but

Just kill it and get it over with. Ok, I am done with that.

Poor baby.

I would so love to join in if you go for the larger silkie project.

Like I need to get myself involved in more, but it sounds like a fun project.

I was reading out in the open forums today about feather sexing of chicks. The forums said it can be unreliable in some breeds. I have 5 SLW chicks about a week old. Is it reliable in this breed? Just looking to see what the gender mix is.

Hmm.. Darn. I'd offer to take him if he weren't crowing yet. I already have 3 crowers, and I am afraid an "older" roo would just add to the noise, rather than being a "subserviant juvie" roo.

If that made sense.

When my MFC roo started crowing, the MFDU roo stopped, except for emergencies.

Chicken politics.
