Was this an extra,, or just part of assorted mix??

I got "hatchery surprise" and "rainbow assortment" both straight run, so it's just a bonus if I get colored egg layers.

Not yet. Really looks like a fayoumi/iowa blue, but I'm not sure if it looked like one as a day old.

I don't know about that breed but I know the last set I ordered there were 5 Minorca and one of them didn't look like any of the others as a chick - she was very unique physically, and outgoing in personality even beyond the curious, friendly nature that all of the Minorca had.

My point is it may be that breed but not look like the typical chick of that breed...IDK.

I get it... hatchery quality is kind of like pet quality. So many people think the animal might not be the correct breed, but they're really just not the perfect standard examples. For my guy, I guess I'll wait until he gets his adult plumage, assuming he doesn't crow very much. In the meantime he's just so cute!

Also look at Murry McMurray hatchery - an excellent catalog with symbols for different attributes (temparature tolerances, hi egg production, confinement tolerance, meat bird, etc) and on the website you can checkmark attributes to search on.

I've seen 3 confused ducks flying around here last 2 days (I assume because of all the smoke). I'm keeping an eye out for other animals fleeing the smoke/fires... especially flying predators (we aren't close enough for many predators fleeing on foot).

I just had to turn the HVAC on because over 85 inside, it's been off for days because I didn't want to chance getting smoke smell inside. Tunnel fire N, Crook fire S, both leaving it very hazy here, I can usually see all the way to San Fran Peak at Flag from my front porch but I can barely see the small mountains right here forming Chino Valley for days now.

I brought some ice out to my flock yesterday afternoon. It got up to 100-F here. Today it's still hot, but not as bad, and there's a breeze blowing.

I live in Mesa and want to keep my chicks enclosed in a side yard. If there's not much breeze there, would it be better to move their pen? And as for their coop, it doesn't have windows. Should I cut out two?

Yes , cut out 2 windows , 1 near the bottom on the windward side if possible and the second on the leeward side up as hi as possible . Being warm air rises this should allow any cooler air to enter the lower and warm air exit the upper .
