Arizona Chickens

The quality on those Orbitz portable misters apparently isn't what it used to be a few years ago. I bought a second one for my babies' run. When I installed it, I had to replace one nozzle because one of them just dripped. And one of the spots where I had a nozzle plug, that joint leaked and dripped. No harm there I thought. But today, a whole day after using it (for a couple of hours or so), two nozzles were just dripping water, and only 1 nozzle was working! My older system (identical model) is fine, but the brand new one is being returned. Fortunately I found my cobra misting stand that I thought got lost, and put it into service. The babies aren't afraid of it thank goodness.

They make thing's cheaper these day's, so they can make more money on people having to buy again. My flock is liking the mister's too, and it seems to help. Have you heard about the recall's on the Hyundai's over the exploding seat belt's?

I'm animal sitting for the next door neighbor's over here again.

You'd think they'd be a bit more careful keeping cars from exploding....

Stay cool and hydrated going to the neighbors.

I take a cold bottle of water over there with me when I go, but I'm also planning on buying some more Gatorade as it helped me so much last summer during those extreme heat temp's.

At what temperature do you guys recommend turning a mister on?
When any of the birds are panting and/or holding their wings away from their bodies. It can be 80 but especially for babies, not much more than that. My midnight majesty marans were panting at 76 as pre-laying pullets but now even if it's over 90 they only pant a little, not even starting until the mid 80's.

**ETA***
Also, you have to watch them to make sure they aren't avoiding shade, water, etc because they don't like being wet from the mist. Once mine stopped being afraid of the mister, they still went to the back of the run, so I put ice bottles there. They really like the blue bunny ice blocks in a shallow tray though. And I wet a corner of the run and they like that too.

OK thank you! Today was quite warm. I brought them inside which they didn't appreciate because outside is still novel. They're not spoiled at all. 🙄

How has everyone's flock's been holding up in this heat? Mine are doing ok over here. The Bielefelder's seem to like the mister's when I have them on. Today I am cleaning out the coop and run again, while it's not being as hot as it will be in the next few day's. I had to take a break and come inside to cool off and drink some Gatorade. I was working in the part that was out in the sun. Later I will be in the shade more as the day heat's up.

Yesterday I gave them some wet feed with the vitamin's and electrolytes in it. Today when I change out all of the water's, I will be adding some of the Mother's Apple Cider Vinegar to the fresh water for them.

I have at least 4 of the Bielefelder pullet's that are laying egg's now, because I found 4 of them out there yesterday that could only have come from them. A couple of them are speckled.

My babies hate the mister but camp out in the shade, sometimes in a mud puddle I make. And they like the ice blocks. I got more blue bunny so I can refill the ice with fully frozen replacements in the later part of the day. Both cockerels are behaving. I think the roadrunner is a silver phoenix, not an EE though.

When it comes to the mister's it might depend on what breed that they are? I had some before that didn't like the mister's much, but would stand in the water pan's or tub's instead. Have you gone back to the site of the hatchery that your chick's came from to compare the roadrunner to what they carry that is in his coloring? That could help you to figure out what breed that he is.
