When you set aside water do you put chlorine bleach in it just when you use it, or when you first store it?
You really should use something like a biofilm eliminator for long term storage. You know that slime in the waterers? You need to prevent that. I use this. Most municipal water sources have already been treated with chlorine or a derivative., but that film still builds up.

This will treat 330 gallons. Long term storage is best in the blue bottles intended for reuse if possible.

This is just me - please do as you see fit when you do your research -- NOTE: I mostly use well water that doesn't have chlorine.
1) If I'm going to rotate thru it in next day or so and it's stored in cool dark place I don't put chlorine in it.
2) If longer term storage I will put chlorine in it.
3) If it's set for longer than I like with or without chlorine in it I'll use it for cleaning or boil in cooking instead of drinking.
4) In an emergency I'd probably boil it or use chlorine or iodine water purification tabs from my camping supplies (this will have a funny taste so take that into consideration).

This discussion on storing water and in what types of containers got me wondering. Do you all use any particular buckets for attaching the water cups (quail cups)? Should they be food grade plastic or is any ol' (new) Home Depot bucket ok?
A long time ago walmart had a bucket with lid that said it was food grade. Of course I don't know if the water cups are food grade--I'd hope so.

I don't know about quail cups - is that like the chicken cups or chicken nipples that you put on the buckets? If so I think if it's exposed to sunlight (which maybe quail cups aren't) then the primary concern would be UV stable plastic. If quail water cups aren't really exposed to sunlight then Food Grade would be primary.

I'm not sure if you get both in one type of plastic. If you can, let me know - I never thought about that before.

I imagine any bucket would be ok. I got mine at walmart and they are food grade. There wasn’t much of a price difference so…however they have black ones that might work better for blocking light. So no algae

You need a food grade one. If you happen to stop by one of those Firehouse Sub's, they sell those empty pickle bucket's for $3.00 each and they have the lid's.
