I wouldn’t be concerned, I had a hen that never used the box for her eggs.

Are they using the hole for dust baths? The soil looks good for that. On hot days wet it down, they’ll love it.

Thanks. Yeah, they use it for dust baths. I'd rather they use the nestbox for my convenience so I was just trying to prevent them from getting the idea of nesting elsewhere. They haven't yet. Just figured it'd be easier to prevent it than to stop it afterwards. -- IF that's what she's thinking about.

Sometimes a hen will spend a lot of time sitting before she lays and the others get upset or just go elsewhere. You could try adding another nest box to try to prevent that. It looks like a nice spot to lay an egg though lol

My thoughts exactly! I do have 2 "real" nestboxes. So far they've only used the one. I've been getting 2 eggs per day from my 2 Novogen girls!

Bielefelder chicks are no longer chicks - and NN/Bielefelder is a roo and the other NN/B (without showing NN) is probably pullet (most blonde one in pics). Here they are...

You can see where there is some barring from the Bielefelder dad in the 2 chick's from the Naked Neck hen. The Bielefelder/NN cockerel has a good sized bib going on there.
