Arizona Chickens

Way less than a dozen eggs in December.
So far in January 4 eggs from about 24 layers.
I moved my 4 Yard Hens into the Greenhouse for the winter onto a raised bed on New Year's Eve. They seem to like it and I'm sure the garden will like it in a few months too. They don't know how lucky they have it to be out of the latest storm. Had maybe an inch of snow overnite and rain yesterday made windchill almost unbearable to me.
I bet they're loving the (relatively) warm greenhouse! That's not many eggs you've been getting.
I guess that cold where you are is affecting their laying? I've been getting 3 eggs per day from my 5 pullets. (Two of them are laying daily.) Is that because they are in their first year I wonder?

Yes, I had a short break in eggs but my gals started up again after their molt. I’m getting 4 to 5 eggs a day now. They will slow down or stop next winter most likely so if you can I suggest you store any extras you get in summer if you don’t want to buy store eggs next winter. I’m going to try both freezing and waterglassing to see which works better. I think the water glass option will be the easiest.

Yes cold and we are on the western slight slope of Chino Valley so the sun sets early (less daylight=fewer eggs). The greenhouse keeps wind off them and maximizes light so they lay more (when they get used to it). Another coop is quite dark and they lay the fewest eggs since I only turn light on to get them into the coop at nite (not to make them lay more eggs).

I watched a Curtis Stone Off-grid YT video (formerly the Curtis Stone Urban Farmer) in Canada who has a good setup - chickens are laying thru winter in his coop that is loosely connected to a high tunnel just for the chickens. He uses a germination matt to keep eggs from freezing in nest box where he is.

Fellow traded me a couple Isabel oegb's for a pair of my oegb Spangles. Was going to sell that pair but I'm very pleased with the trade. Think I'm going to breed them to my Spangles to see if I can get better color/feathers and porcelain. Their in quarantine for now and looking a little rough from the trip here.

They're very pretty! and that's a very nice setup, with the lush plants helping them to feel safe!

Well, there's a hawk out there again eyeballing my chicken's. The hawk came earlier then normal today.
Sunday my husband saw one when we were giving the chickens extra time outside their run. Made me so nervous I coaxed them back in the run (thankfully they're little piggies so that's not too hard to do!).
