Arizona Chickens

We had some big thunder booms and a little rain this afternoon! Woohoo! A tip for anyone who hasn't built a coop yet or might be looking to move theirs: rain is a good time to observe water patterns on the ground. Watch where the water runs and pools. That will give you some ideas about where the best location is for your coop.

In other news, a woman I know who lives in Oklahoma said her city of about 25,000 people passed an ordinance last week banning backyard chickens/quail/rabbits. Fine is $5000 and two months in jail, can you believe that?! She had both chickens and rabbits, all had to be canned or frozen. She is devastated. They tried to fight it but couldn't get the signatures they needed in time.

There are some people out there who are determined to stop anyone from growing and raising their own food. Keep your eyes and ears open and pay attention to local politics.

That is a great tip for someone trying to get started.

When you live in some cities, they begin to run them like the HOA's do. (bunch of little dictator's)

I'd be moving in a heartbeat.

Me too!

In the meantime, I have Naked Neck and Welsh Harlequin duck egg's wiggling in my incubator. I candled them and marked the aircells and removed the turner and put the eggs back in the incubator. My birthday is tomorrow, so I wanted to get that much done early. They start lock down on Thursday with raised humidity. The hatch should be on Saturday.

That is so crazy! I can (sorta) get why people with close neighbors may not want a crowing Rooster nearby.... but hens? And banning rabbits makes absolutely zero sense. They make no noise whatsoever.

This push to prevent people from growing or raising their own food should scare everyone... even if they themselves don't grow or raise food. Self-sufficiency used to be considered "the American way" and was fiercely regarded and highly respected as an individual's right. :old "Control the food, control the people" comes to mind. (Ok... done ranting.)

Could it be that many people there have dog's that they like to run loose, and don't want to have anyone complain when their dog's get into someone else's yard and kill's their flock or rabbit's? Remove the livestock, and the dog's won't have anything to kill?

If that's their reasoning, it sure would be a lame excuse. Most places already have laws that require one to keep one's dogs in their own yard. I think there must be more behind the passing of that ordinance. What that might be is difficult to guess. I can't imagine any logical justification for it. :(

It's hard to say, but many people don't seem to be too logical these day's.

In my area,, things went the opposite direction. Adjacent suburb to ours had forever a ban on chickens and ducks also. No idea about rabbits. But I don't think those were banned.
Well,, here we don't have dictators. :old .. The DECISION to have backyard chickens allowed went to a VOTE. :thumbsup
The tribe has spoken. Chickens are now allowed.:highfive:
