Arizona Chickens

Quote:
I planted it in my yard for my tortoises from seeds I got from native seeds. The tortoises loved it until the chickens came along and ate it all.

It still pops up in the garden and the front yard(where the chickens can't normally go) and I give it to the tortoises and chickens in a more controlled way.
I haven't eaten it myself.

Sneaky!

Gallo del Cielo - only you would plant weeds:p

My 2 year old just ruined a weeks worth of chicken food. He filled the water dish up with food, and the food dish up with water, and back and forth with a little bucket.

Gallo, we used to eat verdulagas, quelites, nopales etc. when I was young. When times are tough, you would be surprised what you can eat. Rattlesnakes, javalinas didn't stand a chance. My father survived the depression eating wild burros. Talk about eating them or horses now, and people look at you like you are monster.

When I first visited my wife's family, they were eating verdulagas, and they weren't even poor.

Check out "Mexico Cooks."

So, anyone in the Phx area feel like processing a bunch of roosters? I have waaaaaayyyy too many, and they just don't understand that NO means NO when the hens squawk at them. I don't know what would be a fair trade, but maybe something like I'd keep one out of four? I need to get rid of probably about 20. Some could be rehomed if anyone needs or wants a roo.

Bob - It sounds like someone is going to have a freezer full of rooster!

Off topic (aren't I always?) we need to have our septic tank pumped. Any recommendations? I called a place from craigs that says it is licensed and all that and they quoted $220 including everything but digging (I can handle that). I think the place that did it last time charged $400. Anything cheaper?

NoSkiveez, that's a pretty impressive bator you got there. Sounds like a pretty good hatch you had too. How many eggs do those little buggers lay?

TT, I've been watering the weeds in the desert by my house to try and get something for the chickens to eat besides store bought feed. I wish I had some fast growing weeds.

Still don't have my garden or seeds started.

Thought I'd get it started today, or get the portable greenhouse set up, but we were getting sustained winds of 35+ mph today out here, and it would have blown over and broken the support rods like it did last year. Have to make stronger ones out of PVC after I get it set up. But, my neighbor came over to ask me to bury a horse he had to put down today so didn't have time to do gardening anyway. Bob's backhoe and burial service. I guess it's like owning a truck, everyone wants you to help them move. Except he pays me for the service.
