I removed one of the feeders to clean it and refill it. When I went to put it back in the run for some reason one of our large black Australorps decided she had to be FIRST to get at the new feed and she flew right at me, knocking the feeder out of my hand and escaping the pen.
She was so surprised to find herself outside the pen and that she just stood there. "Wait a minute. Where am I?" It was easy to scoop her up and put her back in the pen but I lost some expensive organic feed. Better to lose some feed than a hen, I suppose, but sheesh.
Usually they only fly right at me like that when I have warm oatmeal and pumpkin for them on chilly mornings. Then I'm ready for them. They fly up and perch on me or hover in the air to eat out of the containers before I can put them on the ground. I didn't even know chickens could hover like that. They're pretty good at it.
