Arizona Chickens

Yikes.....lost our internet connection this weekend and I just popped on the "communal" computer at work and see I have been logged into BYC all weekend on a page that never got closed from last week! Hope I didn't post anything I don't know about.
I've got a lot of catching up to do!

The local farmer's market had them for $5/doz here the last time I went. Consider that jumbo organic "free-range" eggs at Trader Joes is about $4/doz. Those are boring compared to what most of us here get daily.

It is funny how they eat yogurt! I used yogurt to deliver high doses of pepper (capsicums) a couple months ago. It worked well and they ate all the peppers (which they wouldn't without the yogurt).

I've not tried TJ eggs, but I imagine I would think anything less than marigold, and older than 3 days would be bland, after being so spoiled with the freshies!

I've used strawberry yogurt to give Sulmet as well - forgot about that. I used to put it in their water, but then I accidentally tasted it (don't ask) and it is the most HORRIBLE stuff I've ever tasted!! So now I use the yogurt and put a hefty dose in it. That way I KNOW they got their meds!

A lady at church said that she would pay$6. plus for organic range chicken eggs. I know a lady who raises goats that feels raw goat milk from her farm will reach $10 a gal before the year is out and I personally think we will all see eggs get close to $10 a dozen. organic yellow peppers were $2.69 each last week , We all need to think about selling veggies and eggs to pay for our chicken and turkey habit.

Holy cow... I need a garden.

Well, it appears that I have a HAWK hanging around over here in North Phoenix. I just went outside to check on the flock and the broodybator(she's determined now) and low flying came a BIG bird and landed in my pine. I ran up and sure enough, it was no pigeon. It took off into the neighbor's yard, but holy smokes! My birds free range half the day and then go into their run, which is not covered. Can these things really haul off a full size standard chicken? The roo went nuts when he saw it.

They may not haul it away, but rather eat it where they catch it.

Also in the ad, it claimed that smaller eggs have higher protein and lower cholesterol! The may be less cholesterol, but only becuase the egg is smaller. Protein will also be less!.

But yes, $6 per dozen for fresh organic eggs is reasonable. I have a friend who used to sell organic eggs at a Tucson farmer's market, and she got $6 per dozen--that was a couple of years ago, too.

Man, sure would be nice to make enough from one week's worth of eggs to buy enough feed for a whole month!

Changing the subject - has anyone ever (or do you currently) order from a company canned Azure Standard?

I just discovered that I have the sweetest little 2 month old sex link chick. I was out cleaning the nest boxes out because the rain water is making the color leak from the shavings and stain my eggs

I haven't ever expected these chicks to be people friendly, or even people tolerant since I've handled her maybe 5 times since she was a day old. So I'm leaning in to the nest box, and while the other babies ran away, she came closer. I thought that was odd, but kept cleaning. Then she hopped on to the nest box... So I pet her and she didn't run!! Well then she melted me... When I stopped petting her anf got back to work, she climbed up on to my hand I was supporting myself with, plopped down and got comfy. Awww. Extra mealworms for her today!!!
